First look at new road bridges

We’re removing 4 dangerous and congested level crossings at Coburns, Exford and Ferris roads in Melton, and Hopkins Road in Truganina to make Melton boom gate free.

We’re also building a new, accessible Melton Station with modern facilities for passengers.

We're removing the level crossings at Ferris and Hopkins roads by building new road bridges over the rail line, creating safer connections to the Western Freeway and newly built residential areas.

New walking and cycling paths will be delivered as part of the Victorian Government's Growth Areas Infrastructure Contribution Fund, improving active transport connections and creating more ways to get around.

Concept designs for the new road bridges at Ferris and Hopkins roads are now available, we're seeking feedback from the local community to help refine the designs.

Thanks to everyone who provided feedback earlier this year on the designs for the new Melton Station and rail bridges at Coburns and Exford roads.

Removing these 4 level crossings will make moving around the area easier for more than 73,000 vehicles which use the roads every day, where the boom gates can be down for almost half an hour during the morning peak.

Construction starts later this year, with all 4 boom gates gone and the new Melton station open in 2026, 2 years ahead of schedule.

Why these level crossings need to go

  • Approximately 73,000 vehicles travel through these crossings each day
  • Boom gates are down for up to 28 minutes during the morning peak (7am to 9am)
  • Up to 16 trains travel through these crossings during the morning peak (7am to 9am)

What's important to you

Late last year we asked locals what they value about Melton and Truganina and what they want to see delivered as part of the project.

We've used your feedback alongside technical requirements to shape concept designs for the level crossing removals at Ferris and Hopkins roads.

Read our community consultation report.

Better connections

You told us improving traffic flow, reducing congestion and creating more ways to get around are important to you.

Removing these level crossings will improve safety and ease congestion, making travel time more reliable with no more boom gate delays.

We’re building new walking and cycling paths along the Ferris and Hopkins road bridges, creating safer connections and linking to future paths.

Building for the future

You said keeping the community moving now and in the future is important.

We’ve designed the new road bridges at Ferris and Hopkins roads to support future road and rail upgrades to keep the growing community moving and minimise future disruptions.

This includes space for additional rail tracks, road lanes and future pedestrian connections.

Minimising disruptions

We heard Ferris Road and Hopkins Road are key road links for you to get around.

We’re building the new road bridges alongside the existing roads to minimise disruptions and help keep you moving during construction.

We’ll share more information about what to expect before construction starts later this year.

Benefits of road bridges

  • Minimises disruption during construction
  • Better connections to the Western Freeway
  • Future proofed to support population growth
  • New landscaping
  • New walking and cycling
  • Connections
