How we’ll manage noise, dust and vibration

We're removing the dangerous and congested level crossing at Mt Derrimut Road and building a new Deer Park Station.

Where possible, we will reduce noise and vibration and minimise dust during construction.

The crossing will be removed by building a rail bridge over the road, improving connectivity between the north and south sides of the station and making it easier to move around the area. By 2024, the level crossing will be gone for good.

During construction we will install piles to form the foundations of the new rail bridge and build retaining walls. We will also remove the existing station platform to make way for the new Deer Park Station.

The intensity of the noise and vibrations depends on the ground conditions and distance between your property and the works.

What causes noise and vibration?

The main sources of noise and vibration are:

1. Excavation and rock breaking
2. Drilling deep into the ground, known as piling
3. Heavy machinery, generators and power tools

How we manage noise and vibration

Noise

Prior to works starting, we undertake noise monitoring at different locations in the project area around the Mt Derrimut Road level crossing. This allows us to identify potential noise impacts of our works, and proactively work with affected residents to minimise noise impacts.

During our works, the project team monitors noise and vibration levels to make sure they are within the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) noise control guidelines.

Vibration

While ground vibration may be felt, construction activities are highly unlikely to cause property damage.

We offer free property condition reports for buildings close to high impact works and monitor vibration levels during construction. This helps us understand the existing condition of properties close to our works before we start construction.

How we minimise noise and vibration

• Schedule works during standard construction hours as much as possible, generally from 7am to 6pm Monday to Friday and 8am to 1pm Saturdays
• Use quieter reversing alarms on our vehicles and machines
• Offer respite and relocation to local residents during noisy night works, where noise thresholds are exceeded
• Maintain a buffer zone between work areas and homes
• Keep our machinery in good working order

How we monitor dust

We will install dust monitors around the work site to measure air quality and weather conditions at regular intervals. This will help us to ensure that we have adequate dust controls in place throughout our works.

How we will minimise dust and dirt

• Use water trucks to regularly wet down the site
• Stage works to minimise disturbed soil areas exposed to wind
• Plan earthworks on less windy days
• Cover truck loads and stockpiles
• Reduce the speed of construction vehicles
• Use steel grids at site exit points to reduce mud being dragged onto the roads
• Clean the roads around the site with street-sweepers

Sometimes it is not possible to avoid disturbing residents and we need to consider other options. This can include offering temporary respite and relocation, which is offered to residents before impactful works begin, and in response to requests during works.
