1 August 2015

The project team is committed to keeping you updated onworks for the Burke Road Level Crossing Removal Project; this regular bulletin will provide you with a continuous flow of information about our upcoming work activities.

The Alliance consisting of John Holland, KBR, VicRoads, Public Transport Victoria (PTV), Metro Trains Melbourne (MTM) and the Level Crossing Removal Project, has started work for the Burke Road Level Crossing Removal Project.

The works at Burke Road include removing the level crossing by lowering the rail line under Burke Road, rebuilding Gardiner Station, as well as improvements to road and public transport connections.

What's happening?

Burke Road Temporary Closures

Please be advised that full road closures between Wills Street/Burke Road intersection and King Street/Burke Road intersection (near Gardiner Station), are required during the following times:

  • Friday Evening 28 August – Monday Morning 31 August, 2015.
  • Friday Evening 18 September – Monday Morning 28, September, 2015

Road closures are required to construct the new bridge over the Glen Waverley rail line. Drivers are advised to seek alternative routes during the closures.

The bridge will constructed at the existing ground level and Burke Road will be reopened to traffic when complete. This will allow the team to return at a later date and excavate the soil out underneath the bridge, to lower the rail line, without disrupting drivers and tram commuters.

Works to construct station platforms and Burke Road

  • In late July construction work began on Carroll Crescent including temporary road closures at the corner of Burke Road and Carroll Crescent and Burke Road and Wills corridor. These works and road closures are required in order to construct new road alignments.
  • To build the station platforms and the Burke Road Bridge, the project team will be constructing ground reinforcement near Gardiner Station using piling machines, excavation equipment and concrete trucks. A large piling machine will be visible, and given the nature of ground reinforcement works, high levels of noise and vibration are anticipated.
  • The works will move towards King Street from 10 August for approximately six weeks, and will include impacts on the local road and some utility service (sewer, gas, power etc) relocation.

Works to construct retaining walls

At its lowest point under Burke Road, the rail line will be 6m lower than its existing level.

  • To lower the rail line, the project team will build retaining walls along the rail corridor to support the new rail alignment.
  • This work will involve excavation, drilling and concreting.
  • Works will begin in mid-August at Carroll Crescent and Burke Road and which will progress along the rail corridor. Completion of this work is expected by early October.

King Street/Wills Street Sewer Relocation

  • The project team must relocate the sewer line along King Street to rebuild the Burke Road/King Street intersection. To minimise impact on properties and driveways the sewer main will be relocated under the road using tunnelling equipment. This work involves excavating a series of small access shafts along King Street and tunnelling between them using the boring machine.
  • Works are also required to tunnel the sewer line under the rail line to connect to an existing service at Wills Street. This rail crossing will also be undertaken by constructing two small access shafts and tunnelling between them.
  • During these works there will be temporary changes to vehicle and pedestrian access along King Street and Wills Street. Traffic management and detours will be in place. Access will be maintained at all times.
  • Further information regarding gas and sewer works will be provided to impacted residents.
