Work is powering ahead to make the Lilydale Line level crossing free by 2024, a year ahead of schedule.

Construction is well underway to remove the congested level crossing and roundabout at Coolstore Road, Croydon by elevating the rail line, building a new Croydon Station and transport hub, and creating new road links to connect Croydon’s town centre.

What we're doing

As part of works to remove the level crossing, we need to build a new rail access point on Lincoln Road, near the corner of Dorset Road, to replace the existing access point at the Coolstore Road level crossing. This is called a road-rail vehicle (RRV) access pad. RRV access pads are an asphalted point along the rail corridor used by work crews to safely drive vehicles and machinery directly onto the track for Metro Trains Melbourne routine maintenance and renewal works. These strategically located pads provide critical access to the network and can be used at any time for emergency or planned works.

A gate will be installed to allow work crews to access the RRV access pad. We also need to undertake works to relocate the rail signalling and underground power and equipment, known as the combined services route (CSR).

From Friday 24 May until early July works will continue day and night within the worksite adjacent to the rail corridor near Lincoln Road service road. Ongoing activities include works to relocate the CSR, some utility services and prepare the area for construction of the RRV access pad, which will continue over the coming months.

What to expect

From Friday 24 May, excavation, trenching, pit installation, concrete pours, post and panel installation, and signal installation works will take place. Following these works, testing and commissioning will take place.

During this time:

  • Traffic management will be in place to facilitate deliveries to site, deliveries may occur during the day and night.
  • Some additional trees and vegetation may need to be removed within the works area. We understand trees are important to the community and we work hard to minimise the impact of our works as much as possible.
  • Trenching and excavation will be undertaken as part of work to relocate the CSR, including installation of conduits and pits.
  • Concrete pours will be required for post and panel installation at the site.
  • There will be an increase in construction activity including noise, vibration and vehicle movements.

When we’ll work

These works will take place during the standard construction hours of 7am to 6pm, Monday to Friday and 7am to 3pm, Saturdays and at night from 7pm to 6am. Please be aware works can sometimes take longer than expected or need to be rescheduled due to weather and other factors outside of our control.
