Since 2017, the North Western Program Alliance (NWPA) has been successfully removing some of the most dangerous and congested level crossings across metropolitan Melbourne. By the end of 2021, the Alliance has removed 8 level crossings and constructed 4 new stations, with 3 further projects in delivery and 2 in development.
Given the significant environmental challenges across the globe, sustainable methods and materials are becoming more important when delivering new infrastructure. Guided by LXRP’s Sustainability Plan and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, NWPA’s 2021 Sustainability Strategy leverages the power of an ongoing program of works to continually advance sustainability outcomes for NWPA, the Level Crossing Removal Project (LXRP) and the wider construction community.
Sustainability is at the core of NWPA values of care, empowerment, creativity and excellence. It is through these values that the Alliance incorporates sustainability into all phases of the project life cycle, from early development through to commissioning. As a result, multiple NWPA projects have excelled and set new industry benchmarks in 2021, transforming the lives of the communities they served.
Reservoir became the first train station in Australia to be awarded a 5 Star Green Star As Built rating from the Green Building Council of Australia. Coburg Station then exceeded this achievement, being awarded a 6 Star Green Star result – making it Australia's first 6 Star As Built rated train station. Furthermore, Bell to Moreland had been awarded a ‘Leading’ sustainability As-Built rating of 98 points by the Infrastructure Sustainability Council. These outcomes serve as a positive indication that the Alliance will continue to be a sustainability leader within the LXRP program of works.
NWPA’s delivery approach ensures that the innovations on current projects become standard business practice on future projects. Some of these endeavours, highlights, and achievements are captured in 2021 Sustainability Report.
