On 7 May 2020, the Minister for Planning designated the Preston Level Crossing Removal Project Area under section 95 of the Major Transport Projects Facilitation Act 2009 (MTPF Act). A variation to the project area was made on 10 December 2020 under section 96 of the MTPF Act.

The project area is shown in the plans LEGL./20-018 Sheets 1 to 19 (inclusive) PDF, 3.3 MB. The variation to the project area is shown in LEGL./20-205 Sheets 1 to 14 (inclusive) PDF, 1.7 MB.

The designation of the project area enables the project proponent (the Secretary to the Department of Transport and Planning) to use the project delivery powers under the MTPF Act.
