A grader smoothing out soil and material on site to form the foundations of the road bridge
Major works continue at Brunt Road
The Victorian Government has fast-tracked the Brunt Road, Beaconsfield level crossing removal. The Pakenham Line will be boom gate free by 2025, with 22 level crossings being removed to improve safety, reduce congestion and allow more trains to run more often.
Major works are underway to remove the level crossing at Brunt Road by building a new road bridge over the Pakenham Line. This will reduce congestion for the 8400 vehicles that pass through the crossing each day. Over the coming months, the road bridge and retaining wall structures will begin to take shape. We’re also building new walking and cycling paths along the new road bridge and surrounding areas, improving local connections.
About 100 trees and 50,000 plants, shrubs and grasses will be planted as part of the project.
By 2025, with the completion of the Metro Tunnel as well as bigger trains and high capacity signalling, up to 121,000 extra peak hour passengers will be able to travel on the Pakenham Line each week.
The level crossing at Brunt Road will be gone for good in 2024, one year ahead of schedule.
Why the level crossing needs to go
- 8400 vehicles pass through the level crossing each day
- Boom gates down for 24 minutes of the morning peak
- 2 near misses and 1 collision since 2012
- 24 trains through the level crossing during the morning peak
We've been busy in Beaconsfield
- We've been working to build the new road bridge and install the retaining wall panels at Brunt Road.
- We're constructing the foundations and retaining wall of the new road bridge.
- The retaining wall will be made up of 160 panels, which will range from 1m to 9.5m in height.
Major construction continues
Over the past few months, we've been:
- Continuing earthworks and relocating utilities to make way for the new road bridge
- Completing piling works on either side of the rail line
- Construction the road bridge abutment walls
- Installing concrete panels for the retaining wall.
What's next
The road bridge will start to take shape as we continue building the retaining walls and start installing the bridge beams.
We’ll also continue earthworks and relocating underground services to make way for the new road bridge.
In the coming months, we’ll start works to permanently close access to Brunt Road from Kenilworth Avenue and Copper Beech Drive. Vehicles will still be able to access Brunt Road via Just Joey Drive.
We’ll keep you up to date about changed traffic conditions in the area as works progress.
Disruptions
Buses replace trains on sections of the Cranbourne and Pakenham lines from 9.30pm, Friday 24 November to last service Sunday 10 December.

Upcoming works at Station Street, Beaconsfield
To help create a level crossing free Pakenham Line, we’re removing the level crossing at Station Street, Beaconsfield by building a road bridge over the rail line.
Building a road bridge means we can remove the crossing sooner, improves connections to the Beaconsfield Station precinct, and allows for future transport upgrades.
The level crossing at Station Street, Beaconsfield will be gone for good in 2025.
In the coming months, we’ll begin to prepare for major construction, including:
- Delivering oversize equipment to the project site
- Constructing hardstand areas to create a safe surface for heavy construction equipment
- Piling works to support the foundations for the new road bridge
Disruptions
Traffic changes on Kenilworth Avenue until January 2024:
- Eastbound traffic will continue travelling along Kenilworth Avenue
- Westbound traffic will detour via Woods Street and Princes Highway, or Brunt Road and Princes Highway.
- Kenilworth Avenue westbound bus stop (Route 836) will be temporarily closed. Alternative bus stop located on Beaconsfield Avenue.
