Upgrades to Berwick Station precinct

The Victorian Government has removed the dangerous and congested level crossing at Clyde Road. In total, 22 level crossings will be removed on the Pakenham Line, making it level crossing-free by 2025, improving safety, reducing congestion and allowing more trains to run more often.

With landscaping complete and the finishing touches made to the road underpass, works have moved to the Berwick Station precinct.

We will remain in the area until early 2023, while we upgrade car parks, build a new bus interchange and pocket park, and improve pedestrian and cyclist connections.

The new bus interchange, with double the number of bays, will open in the station’s southern car park in late 2022. We will then convert the old bus interchange north of Berwick Station into parking spaces, with works finishing in early 2023.

The station’s new transport hub will also feature landscaping and improved walking and cycling connections, improving accessibility for commuters.

The Clyde Road level crossing is the 12th to be removed along the Pakenham Line, with 10 more to go to make it boom-gate free by 2025, paving the way for more services more often for commuters in Melbourne’s south east.

Project benefits

  • Dangerous and congested level crossing gone
  • Reduced travel time for 22,000 drivers
  • Safer paths for pedestrians and cyclists
  • New bus interchange
  • 450 additional commuter car spaces being built.

Berwick's big day out

A huge thank you to over 700 locals who braved the cold to celebrate the new Clyde Road underpass with us.

The Berwick Community Fun Day, held at Buchanan Park on Saturday 23 July 2022, featured free food and coffee, face painting, live music and dance performances, children's activities, a treasure hunt and a magician.

Skilled artists from St Margaret's Berwick Grammar answered questions about their artwork, currently on display along site fencing at Berwick Station's southern car park.

Local Rotary Club member Gus Dominguez said the new Clyde Road underpass has had a significant impact, as previously it could take half an hour to cross the railway.

'If you lived in this area, you were most likely very unhappy with the level crossing that we had before, the queues were tremendous. This is a fantastic piece of infrastructure for the town, no questions asked,' Gus said.

Rotary also held a free sausage sizzle at the event, while Berwick CFA allowed kids to get up close and personal with a fire truck.

Landscaping with distinction

Landscaping works along the new Clyde Road underpass were completed in July, with 37,000 trees, shrubs and grasses planted. We were also able to lend a helping hand in the local community.

In August, we donated hundreds of plants to Cire Community School Berwick, an independent secondary school, Nossal High School and Little by Little Café. Cire will use the plants as they launch their own horticulture program.

Designed by talented students at Nossal High School, we also helped construct an indigenous garden under the direction of the talented teenagers. We held a 'little landscapers' event at Only About Children daycare in May. In the session, kids learned about our works with their own succulent rock planters.

A pocket park also opened up over 500 square metres ofland to the community. The park is located at the corner of Clyde Road and Jane Street and includes a Woody Meadow garden, consisting of a diverse range of native Australian shrubs, as well as seating, a footpath and lawn. The pocket park was completed in September.

Upcoming works

Over the coming months, we’ll continue working on the new Berwick Station bus interchange in the precinct’s southern car park and start upgrades in the northern car park.

The new bus interchange will open in late 2022, with the final car park upgrades to be completed in early 2023. The multi-deck car park at Berwick Station will open in early 2023.

Other activities will include:

  • Kangan Drive and Clyde Road
  • pedestrian link upgrades
  • final landscaping.

Changes to the way you travel

Pedestrians and cyclists

Ongoing pedestrian changes on the southern side of Berwick Station as we upgrade pedestrian and cyclist connections. Wayfinding will be in place.

Parking

Intermittent car park closures will be in place while we complete preparation works in October. There will be car park closures in Berwick Station’s northern car park from October until late 2022. The southern car park remains closed until early 2023 for construction of the new multi-deck car park.
