Major works in early 2022

The Victorian Government is removing 22 dangerous level crossings, including the one at Clyde Road, as part of a $15 billion investment to upgrade the Pakenham line that will improve safety, reduce congestion and allow more trains to run more often. The Pakenham line will be level crossing-free by 2025.

What's coming up

We’ve been working throughout 2021 to prepare the structural foundations for the new road underpass.

Major works will take place in January and February on the new rail bridge and road underpass.

To safely build the new structures, we will temporarily close the Pakenham line from mid January to early February.

During this time, we'll also close Clyde Road from 10 January to 20 February so we can excavate the road underpass and install critical infrastructure like structural walls, drainage systems and new road surface.

When Clyde Road reopens in February, the level crossing will be gone for good.

Works will also continue on the new bus interchange and multi-deck car park during this time.

See more information on upcoming works in this community update.

Project Benefits

  • Improved safety for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians
  • Improved travel times and reduced congestion
  • Enables more trains to run more often

Upcoming works

  • Install drainage in the underpass
  • Install new drainage at Reserve Street and Enterprise Avenue
  • Intersection upgrades at Reserve Street, Jane Street and Enterprise Avenue

The new rail bridge

The new rail bridge is made up of 12 steel bridge beams fabricated nearby in Dandenong. Each beam weighs eight tonne and is around 25 metres long. The bridge beams have been joined together into three sections using concrete.

During the rail closure, these three sections will be lifted into place on top of the concrete supports using a 650-tonne crawler crane. Works will then connect them into the existing rail, lay new track, and install overhead wiring and signals, before trains start using the new rail bridge in early February.

Architectural panels made from perforated aluminium will then be installed on the new rail bridge, forming images that represent the local area.

What to expect

  • Detours, reduced speed limits and increased travel times through the area
  • Noise, dust and vibration
  • You'll notice increased heavy vehicle activity, construction traffic and construction workers moving through the area

The new road underpass

We'll excavate around 36,000 cubic metres, or over 14 Olympic swimming pools of material between Reserve Street and Enterprise Avenue when we dig out the underpass.

A comprehensive drainage system will be installed to prevent the new road underpass from flooding.

A total of 230 precast architectural concrete panels and hand rails will be installed to help form the new shared use paths, which are more than 3m wide.

We’ll then build the centre medians, lay asphalt, install traffic signals and mark lines ahead of opening the new road to traffic.
