Major works start soon

Better local connections at Berwick

The Victorian Government is removing 17 dangerous level crossings, including the one at Clyde Road, as part of a $16 billion investment to upgrade the Pakenham line that will improve safety, reduce congestion and allow more trains to run more often.

Early works are underway to remove the Clyde Road, Berwick level crossing and build a road underpass, improving safety and traffic flow, while creating better local connections to the nearby residential, health and education precincts.

Designs have been updated for the new road underpass, Berwick Station bus interchange precinct and landscaping, based on what we heard was important to the local community.

The new bus interchange will be relocated to the south side of the station, allowing more services to run, and creating comfortable areas for locals to wait for public transport all year round.

New walking and cycling connections will improve access to station car parking, public transport and vital community services off Kangan Drive.

Over the coming months, there will be changes to the way you travel in the area, with temporary lane closures along Clyde Road as we prepare the area for major construction in early 2021.

The level crossing will be gone for good in 2022.

Project update

What's happening

Service relocations, including to water and power have been progressing as we prepare the area for major construction early next year.

Over the coming months, we’re building a new northbound U-turn lane at Gibb Street that will provide access into Reserve Street for drivers once the new road underpass opens. We’re also installing a new signalised pedestrian crossing across Clyde Road.

Lanes will be closed on Clyde Road between Reserve Street and Mansfield Street during works. The southbound U-turn lane at Reserve Street will also be closed at times until early 2021.

You can still move freely through the area with traffic management and detours in place.

Major works

Major construction will start in early 2021 with piling works to create the foundations for the new road underpass.

We'll also start works on the new bus interchange.

Buses will replace trains on sections of the Cranbourne and Pakenham lines from 10pm Friday 19 February to last service Thursday 25 February.

Clyde Road will also be closed for periods during this time, between Enterprise Avenue and Reserve Street, to allow us to safely carry out works. Detours will be in place.

During this time, we'll work around the clock on the new Clyde Road underpass and along the Pakenham line at South Gippsland Highway, where we're installing beams for the new road bridge.

More information about what to expect during major construction will be shared with the community soon.

Your new community representatives

We received overwhelming interest from the Berwick community to join our Stakeholder Liaison Group (SLG). The SLG has been established as
a key information sharing avenue between the project and local community during major construction.

Members were selected to represent a broad range of community views and will use their community networks to help share information during works.

Representatives include:

  • Berwick CFA
  • Nossal High School
  • Federation University
  • St. John of God Hospital
  • Rotary Club of Berwick
  • local community representatives
  • observers from the City of Casey.

The first SLG meeting will be held in late 2020. Meeting summaries will be made available on our website.

Your new transport hub

We’ve updated designs for the Clyde Road level crossing removal and the new Berwick bus interchange, based on what we heard was important to the community through our recent consultation.

Key themes we heard from you

An enhanced local identity

The new road underpass will feature images reflecting the local landscape. Heading into Berwick village, the colours reflect the leafy township and looking south, the grassland plains and local suburban skyline.

Earthy textured materials on the walls of the underpass include a fossil inspired panel to highlight the area’s rich history. Anti-graffiti coatings will be applied, where possible.

Landscaping

More than 37,000 trees, plants and shrubs will be planted in the area, including gum and oak trees to provide shade and wind protection.

Better walking and cycling connections

A new shared use path will run from Reserve Street into the new bus interchange at Enterprise Avenue, improving walking and cycling connections in the area.

New and upgraded pedestrian connections will make it safer and easier to access public transport, commuter parking and vital health and education services off Kangan Drive.

Improved facilities and safety

The new bus interchange has been designed for safety and accessibility, with sheltered seating for year-round weather protection and good visibility day and night.

New bike storage facilities for 90 bikes will provide more ways to access public transport.

Did you know?

Two new bus services will run between Berwick, Clyde and Clyde North from early 2021, improving connections across Melbourne’s south east.
