Works underway at Clyde Road

The Victorian Government is removing 17 dangerous level crossings, including the one at Clyde Road, as part of a $16 billion investment to upgrade the Pakenham line that will improve safety, reduce congestion and allow more trains to run more often.

The Clyde Road, Berwick level crossing will be removed by building a road underpass to minimise disruptions to road and rail users. Early works are underway, and the level crossing will be gone for good by 2022.

Removing the level crossing will improve safety and traffic flow, while creating better local connections to the nearby residential, health and education precincts.

The Berwick Station bus interchange will also be upgraded and relocated to the south side of the station, improving accessibility and enabling more services to run in the future.

In mid July, during a closure of the Pakenham line, we worked 24 hours a day to carry out signalling and rail infrastructure works in preparation for major construction.

To create a safe work zone, we have closed pedestrian access on the eastern side of the level crossing and realigned the western side, to keep you moving during works.

Traffic management and pedestrian detours will be in place to help you move safely through the area as works progress.

Victoria’s Big Build continues over winter, focusing on level crossing removals in the south east, works on the Mordialloc Freeway, Metro Tunnel and West Gate Tunnel, and starting works on the Monash Freeway Upgrade.

Project update

What's happening

Underground services and geotechnical investigations continue in the area, ahead of service relocation works.

As we get ready for major construction, trees and vegetation will be removed to build the new road underpass, install infrastructure and relocate underground services.

More than 20,000 trees, shrubs and plants will be planted in the project area when works are complete.

Call for nominations

We’re looking for community members to join a Stakeholder Liaison Group (SLG) as we head towards major construction.

SLG members will provide local insights and help share information with the community to minimise disruptions.

If you’re involved in a local community group or network, or have an interest in the project, we want to hear from you.

Applications close Monday 24 August.

What we heard from you

Almost 300 locals took part in our recent online engagement, to help shape the new community open space around Berwick Station, and designs for the new bus interchange.

Key themes

Landscaping and local identity

We heard how important trees and green spaces are to the community. You also asked for materials that reflect and enhance the village look and feel of Berwick.

Connections

We heard you want better walking and cycling connections around the station and new bus interchange.

Safety and accessibility

You asked for better lighting, spaces with good lines of sight and areas that are accessible to everyone in the community.

Improved facilities

You want more public seating and better facilities at the bus interchange, with weather protection.

What's next?

Your feedback, along with what we heard from key stakeholders, will help refine the designs for the new Berwick bus interchange precinct, including landscaping plans. We'll provide an update once designs have progressed.

How you’ve shaped the project so far

Designs have been updated based on what we heard is important to you, during community engagement last year.

Safety

You asked us for safer walking and cycling paths, so we made improvements to the shared use path along Clyde Road.

Identity

You wanted less concrete in the design, so we added more colour through bridge cladding and retaining wall treatments and soft landscaping.

Connections and wayfinding

Jane Street and Reserve Street will stay open after we heard you wanted better connections.

Health and safety

The health and safety of our workers and the community is our key priority as we continue works on the Clyde Road project.

Cleaning has increased across the public transport network, including on replacement buses, to help stop the spread of coronavirus.
