Welcome to the new Clyde Road

The Victorian Government has removed the dangerous level crossing at Clyde Road as part of the $15 billion investment in the Pakenham line. These upgrades will make the Pakenham line level crossing free by 2025, improving safety, reducing congestion and allowing more trains to run more often.

The dangerous and congested level crossing on Clyde Road in Berwick is officially gone for good with drivers now traveling underneath the new rail bridge.

The 58th level crossing removal marks a major milestone in works to upgrade the Pakenham line and comes as part of a summer construction blitz, which also saw major works at nearby Hallam Station and on the Cranbourne line.

The new rail bridge reduces congestion and improves safety for the 22,000 drivers that travelled through the level crossing each day, with the boom gates down for around a third of the morning peak, delaying people travelling to and from the local area.

The project also includes transforming the Berwick transport hub, including building:

  • a bigger bus interchange with better facilities at Berwick Station
  • new plaza and landscaping
  • upgraded walking and cycling paths for better local connections.

The new Berwick Station bus interchange – which will double the number of bus bays and improve accessibility for passengers – is scheduled for completion later this year.

The Clyde Road level crossing is the 12th to be removed along the Pakenham line, with 10 more to go to make it boom-gate free by 2025, paving the way for more services, more often for commuters in Melbourne’s south east.

Next up, we'll remove level crossings at Webb Street in Narre Warren, Station Street and Brunt Road, both in Beaconsfield.

Celebratory coffees on us

Thanks to Little by Little Café, we kept Berwick residents caffeinated to celebrate the opening of the Clyde Road underpass on Monday 21 February.

Staff at the Reserve Street café were kept busy, making free hot drinks for members of the public all morning.

Little by Little Café is open for breakfast and lunch from 8am to 3pm seven days a week.

See the full menu or make a booking at the café, which serves Five Senses Coffee.

Thank you!

On behalf of the Clyde Road Level Crossing Removal Project, we would like to thank you for your ongoing patience and cooperation during construction.

Stats behind a road underpass

A lot goes into a six-week road closure. Check out some of the key facts we collected during major works.

  • Around 100,000 worker hours logged
  • More than 8500 workers on site, averaging about 200 workers per day
  • 40,000 cubic metres material excavated from Clyde Road and nearby intersections, equivalent to over 16 Olympic size swimming pools
  • 30,000 tonnes quarry materials delivered to site
  • 3500 tonnes of asphalt laid
  • 200 tonnes of reinforced steel used
  • 95 pieces of mobile plant used, excluding trucks.

Upcoming works

Over the coming months, we’ll continue working to put the finishing touches on the underpass, tidy up nearby areas and complete landscaping, with works set to be completed by mid 2022.

Works on the new bus interchange at Berwick Station will continue until late 2022.

Our activities will include:

  • installing and painting concrete panels along the shared use paths and underpass
  • completing fencing installation around the area
  • continuing car park reinstatement works at Berwick Station
  • commencing landscaping throughout the area.

Changes to the way you travel

Pedestrians and cyclists

Pedestrian access will alternate between the eastern and western shared use paths while finishing works take place.

There will be pedestrian access at all times, to enable travel in both directions along Clyde Road.

Road

Intermittent road and lane closures along Clyde Road in both directions as required. Traffic management and reduced speeds in place at times.
