Beaconsfield road bridge taking shape

As part of the Victorian Government’s commitment to removing all 22 level crossings on the Pakenham Line by 2025, we’re removing the level crossing at Station Street, Beaconsfield by building a road bridge over the rail line.

The new road bridge is coming to life, with the northern roundabout on Beaconsfield Avenue installed and all 52 bridge beams now lifted into place.

In December, works will continue to build the southern roundabout on Kenilworth Avenue.

Getting rid of these boom gates will help make the Pakenham Line level crossing free in 2025 and, together with the Metro Tunnel, will allow more trains to run.

It will also give people access to 5 new underground stations in Melbourne’s CBD and surrounds.

Why this level crossing needs to go

  • 25 trains during the morning peak
  • 3 near misses and one collision since 2012
  • Boom gates down for 28% of the morning peak

Works progressing at Station Street, Beaconsfield

Over the past months, crews completed building the roundabout at the intersection of Station Street, Beaconsfield Avenue and Goff Street, and asphalting in the northern car park.

Thank you Beaconsfield locals for your patience whilst we completed these works.

Beaming big in Beaconsfield

In October, we continued building the new road bridge over the rail line and constructing the new Beaconsfield Station car park.

These works involved:

  • ground improvement works
  • installing power poles in the car park
  • lifting bridge structures on the south side of the rail line.

37 bridge beams were delivered to site overnight and installed using a 650 tonne crane. Each beam weighs between 38 and 61 tonnes.

A total of 52 beams have been installed to form the structure of the 427m new road bridge, spanning the rail line and connecting Beaconsfield Avenue to Kenilworth Avenue.

Bridge beams were delivered overnight to minimise traffic disruptions and unloaded and installed during the day by our construction team.

This marks the completion of beam lifts at Beaconsfield.
