More trains, more often on the Cranbourne Line

The Victorian Government is investing more than $1 billion to duplicate the Cranbourne Line, remove the last two level crossings on the line and build a new Merinda Park Station – improving safety, reducing congestion and allowing for more trains, more often. Once complete, the Cranbourne Line will be completely level crossing free.

Thanks for your patience over summer as our crews worked non-stop from early January to early February around Dandenong Station, Merinda Park Station, Lynbrook Station and Cranbourne Station.

With the eight-kilometre track duplication now complete and a brand new Merinda Park Station open a year ahead of schedule, Cranbourne Line trains are running every 10 minutes on average in the morning peak.

A new timetable started on Sunday 13 February, with 50 extra services now running every week during peak periods from Cranbourne, Lynbrook and Merinda Park stations.

The second track reduces the need for trains to sit idle at Lynbrook and Dandenong stations to wait for a single line to clear, saving up to eight minutes in layover time at Dandenong and Lynbrook on all weekday services.

While the first phase of works on the Cranbourne Line Upgrade has finished ahead of schedule, work hasn't stopped, with the last remaining level crossings on the Cranbourne Line set to be removed at Camms Road in Cranbourne and Webster Street in Dandenong.

We have now completed several major projects in the $1 billion Cranbourne Line Upgrade, including:

  • 8km track duplication between Cranbourne and Dandenong
  • Brand-new Merinda Park Station
  • Greens Road level crossing removal
  • Untangling the tracks at the junction where the Cranbourne and Pakenham lines merge in Dandenong
  • Track laid over the new dual rail bridges at Greens Road, Abbotts Road and Eumemmerring Creek

Bye bye Greens Road boom gates

In January, we removed the boom gates at Greens Road, Dandenong South and put the finishing touches on the two new 600-metre rail bridges.

In February, trains started travelling on the new dual rail bridge, rather than stopping traffic on Greens Road.

Separating trains from cars and trucks at Greens Road is slashing congestion through the busy Dandenong industrial hub, home to more than 10 per cent of Victorian manufacturing output and 60,000 jobs.

New Merinda Park Station open

The brand-new Merinda Park Station has opened a year ahead of schedule with two platforms to accommodate more trains, and modern facilities including a designated drop-off area and secure bike storage.

Better connections and access are essential to the rebuild, including new lifts, ramps and a direct entry point from the eastern side of the tracks.

A bright new pedestrian underpass also connects both sides of the station and can be used by local residents to access nearby shops and services on both sides of the rail line.

The new Merinda Park Station also features a waiting room and more shelter on both platforms, providing passengers with more weather protection if needed.

With plenty of space, CCTV cameras, more lighting, and fresh landscaping, Merinda Park Station is ready to accommodate the 1500 passengers who use the station each day.

One of the last of the remaining crossings on the Cranbourne line is set to be removed by building a road bridge at Camms Road in Cranbourne. The project is on track for completion in 2024, one year ahead of schedule.

Early works will begin in the lead up to major construction.

Over the coming months, we will:

  • set up site storage and fence off work areas to keep our workforce and the public safe
  • install temporary facilities for workers
  • relocate utility services that will be in the way of the major works, including water, drainage and sewer pipes as well as some power lines
  • conduct investigative works to inform construction.

Major construction is set to start in mid-2022. Residents and businesses in the local area will receive more details ahead of any work starting.
