Bigger trains for the west
We're getting ready to run longer 9-car VLocity trains on the Melton Line from 2028.
Passengers in Melbourne's west will benefit with the new 9-car trains boosting passenger capacity by 50%, reducing crowding on busy services.
As well as providing more space, the 9-car trains will also provide more doors for boarding.
As part of the $650 million Melton Line Upgrade we'll build a new stabling yard in Cobblebank, approximately 700m east of the new Melton Station, to house the new trains.
Construction of the new Cobblebank train stabling yard is expected to start in 2026 and the 9-car VLocity trains will run on the Melton Line from 2028.
We're also getting on with building the new Melton Station and removing 4 dangerous and congested level crossings at Coburns, Exford and Ferris roads in Melton, as well as Hopkins Road in Truganina to make Melton boom gate free.
To accommodate the longer trains, the new Melton Station will feature extended platforms.
All 4 sets of boom gates will be gone, and the new Melton Station will open in 2026, 2 years ahead of schedule.
Project benefits
- Longer 9-car VLocity trains
- Increasing passenger capacity by 50%
- Comfortable seats, bike storage area and accessibility improvements
- New Victorian-built VLocity fleet
- New Melton Station with extended platforms
About Cobblebank's train stabling yard
When the 9-car VLocity trains start rolling out on the Melton Line, they’ll be stabled at a new facility in Cobblebank.
A train stabling yard is where trains are stored and cleaned, ready to begin service the next day.
The new stabling yard in Cobblebank will allow trains to be at Melton Station, ready for first services of the day and support trains running efficiently between Melton and the city.
We'll consult the community about the new stabling yard next year.
Construction is expected to start in 2026 and the Cobblebank train stabling yard will open and 9-car VLocity trains will run on the Melton Line from 2028.
The Cobblebank stabling yard will include:
- stabling for 6 9-car VLocity trains
- signalling and communication systems
- facilities and parking for workers
- connections to the Melton Line so trains can easily enter and exit the yard
- CCTV and lighting.
