We’re building West Tarneit Station to better connect the growing suburbs of the west to Melbourne’s CBD.

The important new public transport link on the V/Line network’s Geelong Line will be located near the corner of Leakes and Davis roads.

The new station will include a four-bay bus interchange, parking for 400 commuters, and an accessible pedestrian underpass.

The station will also feature a welcoming and well-lit precinct, with landscaping, seating, separated walking and cycling paths, bike hoops and secure bike storage.

The design ensures the area can accommodate future rail improvements and planned urban development on both sides of the rail line.

Site investigations for the project have been ongoing since 2024. In 2025, we started to prepare the area for construction. Major construction is now underway, and the new station will open to the community in 2026.

Major construction activities will include larger scale works, such as excavation and structural works, to build West Tarneit Station.

The project team is committed to reducing and minimising noise, dust, light and vibration impacts during construction. We'll also keep the community up to date with upcoming disruptions and impacts due to our works.

Construction stages

Construction for major transport infrastructure projects like a new train station is carried out in a staged approach. Below are the key stages of construction for the new West Tarneit Station.

Site investigations

Through 2024

Site investigation works are usually low impact activities that are carried out during the early planning phase of a project. Information collected from site investigations helps inform the technical designs, construction methodology and other plans for the project.

Site investigation activities carried out in 2024 for West Tarneit Station include:

• surveys of the land, underground services, property boundaries and land features
• geotechnical investigations, which assesses the site's subsurface soil and rock conditions
• soil and water testing
• cultural heritage assessments
• environmental and ecological assessments.

Preparatory works

2025

Preparatory works are usually low to moderate impact activities that prepare the area for major construction.

As part of these works, we have carried out the following activities:

• set up site offices and works areas located on the south and north sides of the rail line
• created storage areas for construction materials and equipment, known as 'laydown' areas
• installed roadwork signage and safety barriers along the rail corridor and project area
• constructed new temporary car parks and pedestrian connections for our workforce
• built temporary access roads for our workforce into the project site
• established minor changes to the local road network and set up traffic management on Leakes Road from Heartlands Boulevard to Embleton Avenue, to safely manage construction vehicles entering the project site.

Major construction

Mid 2025 and throughout 2026

We have started the major construction period, which is the stage of the project when our highest impact works are carried out. During major construction, we'll build the commuter car park, bus interchange, pedestrian underpass and West Tarneit Station structures.

Finishing works

2026

When major construction wraps up, we'll put the finishing touches on the new West Tarneit Station precinct.

This includes finishing up the landscaping, installing lighting and CCTV, installing architectural elements, reinstating areas we may have had to change or occupy to build the station, and finalising pathways and connections.

Construction activities

Some of the many construction activities we will carry out through 2025 and 2026 will include:

• Finalising works around the established site
• Relocating and protecting essential underground service
• Earthworks and ground excavations
• Commuter car park construction
• Bus interchange works
• Pedestrian underpass construction
• Station platform and infrastructure
• Creation of new precinct spaces and pedestrian and cyclist connections.

Managing noise, dust, light and vibration

Our major works can cause noise, vibration and create dust and dirt. Below are the ways in which our team mitigates these impacts.

Noise

Before starting construction, we undertake noise monitoring at different locations around the project area.

We monitor sound levels using specialised equipment before and during works so that we can assess the impact to residents and implement further mitigation measures if necessary.

How we minimise noise

• Works are scheduled during the daytime as much as possible, generally from 7am to 6pm between Monday to Friday and 7am to 1pm on Saturdays. However, there will be times where we will need to work on Sundays, overnight and 24/7 in the project area and rail corridor when trains aren’t running
• We maintain a buffer zone between work areas and homes where possible
• We use temporary noise mounds, barriers and enclosures during noisy works
• We use quieter reversing alarms on our vehicles and machines
• We keep our machinery in good working order and meet required noise standards.

Dust

We’ll install dust monitors around the work sites to measure air quality and weather conditions at regular intervals. This will help us to ensure we have adequate dust controls in place.

How we minimise dust and dirt

• We use water trucks to regularly wet down our sites
• We stage works to minimise disturbed soil being exposed to wind, where possible
• We reduce the speed of our construction vehicles
• We cover truck loads and stockpiles
• Steel grids are used at site exit points to reduce mud being dragged onto roads from vehicle tyres
• We clean the roads around our sites with street-sweepers.

Light

There will be times throughout the construction period when temporary lighting is needed to keep our workers safe. We’ll keep the amount of light to the minimum necessary for safe access or construction. Light towers will be directed away from surrounding properties.

Vibration

We monitor vibration levels during construction and offer property condition reports for buildings within close proximity to high impact works. This helps us understand the existing condition of properties before we start major construction.

Vegetation and landscaping

We’ll plant more than 17,000 new trees, plants and shrubs in the station precinct as part of the landscaping plan.

We'll keep the community up to date during construction. This includes nearby residents, local businesses, road users, Tarneit Station users, local community groups and other relevant stakeholders.
