19 August 2025

We’re making the Sunbury Line level crossing free in 2025, a year ahead of schedule, removing eight dangerous and congested level crossings to improve safety and reduce congestion. At Calder Park Drive, we’ve removed the level crossing by building a new road bridge over the rail line.

The Calder Park Drive road bridge is now open to traffic in both directions. We’ve also permanently closed Holden Road at the level crossing.

In the coming months, we’ll finish the new shared use path and seating area, as well as planting and landscaping, lighting and other completion works.

U-turn facility on Calder Freeway

We’re closing the U-turn facility on the Calder Freeway near Holden Road following the permanent closure of Holden Road. Drivers can use Bulla-Diggers Rest Road interchange to U-turn. We will notify drivers in the area via signage closer to the date.

Nottingham Way

We’re reinstating the Nottingham Way cul-de-sac in August. During this time, there will be reduced parking available on Nottingham Way while we reinstate kerbing and asphalt, and complete landscaping.

Train disruptions on the Sunbury Line in August

Buses replace trains on sections of the Sunbury Line in August for level crossing removal works and Metro Tunnel Project works including:

  • between North Melbourne and Sunbury from 10pm Friday 15 August to 4am Saturday 16 August
  • between North Melbourne and Sunbury on Sunday 17 August between 1am to 4am, and from 8.30pm to last service
  • between North Melbourne and Sunbury from 8.45pm to last service each night, Monday 25 August to Wednesday 27 August.

Train line works

Track grinding will take place while trains are not running. Track grinding involves special rail machines with grinding wheels to reshape the top of the rails, so they fit better with the train wheels. There will be increased noise at times during these works.

Planting and landscaping throughout spring

We’re planting more than 100,000 native and indigenous plants, trees and grasses at Calder Park Drive and Holden Road to reflect the local landscape. Planting will continue throughout spring.

What to expect

  • Traffic management may be in place in times, including lane closures and reduced speed limits for completion works.
  • Large machinery moving around the area and deliveries including concrete trucks and landscaping deliveries.
  • Access to properties and local businesses will be maintained via local roads.

Note: The above activities may vary if our works are disrupted due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances
