Facilitated by the Level Crossing Removal Project (LXRP), the session started with an Acknowledgement of Country and welcomed participants to the first online project update for the Diggers Rest Level Crossing Removal Project.
The session commenced with a progress update on the Old Calder Highway and Watsons Road level crossing removals.
A general update on the timeline was provided, highlighting that the project is currently in the major construction phase for the Old Calder Highway removal, and the site establishment and early works phase for the Watsons Road removal.
Construction progress imagery and timelapse footage for the Old Calder Highway removal was shared, showcasing works on the:
- Site offices and works areas set up in mid 2024
- New temporary diversion road at Old Calder Highway open to vehicles in August 2024
- Piling works for the bridge foundations completed in September 2024
- Bridge abutments with works on these continuing through to November 2024
- Bridge columns and structures with works on these continuing through to November 2024
- Retaining wall works which will continue through to late-December
The team also provided a summary of the around the clock works carried out in late August and early September 2024.
The team then provided an overview of upcoming works and changes to the way the community travels through the Diggers Rest area.

A summary of ongoing community engagement activities was presented, including information about how the community can stay up to date with project news, travel disruptions, and how to contact the team.
The project team then answered questions from participants, including questions about:
- Project completion timelines
- Pedestrian access to the platforms at Diggers Rest Station
- Landscaping and urban design plans for the new road bridges
- Cycle path on the bridge
- Construction materials and suppliers
- Train replacements
- Sound and light walls on Punjel Drive.
