Main Road level crossing gone forever

Main Road re-opened without boom gates on Monday 28 November after 3 weeks of round-the-clock works.

The Main Road level crossing was Victoria's most dangerous. There have been 2 deaths and more than 60 near misses at the crossing in the past decade alone — more than any other, anywhere else in the state.

It was also one of the most congested, with the boom gates down for more than an hour in the two-hour morning peak.

With the level crossing now gone forever, finishing touches continue, with the project set to be complete in May 2017. This includes work on the new St Albans and Ginifer stations, surrounding pedestrian crossings, footpaths, kerbing, landscaping and car parks.

St Albans and Ginifer stations – ongoing day and night works

During December a small night crew has been installing platform shelters, ramps, screens, canopy roofing, cladding and perforated panels on the new stations.

Intersection works continue on McKechnie Street, Willaton Street and St Albans Road, with some short-term lane closures.

Retail build at St Albans Station

Early steel works have commenced for the construction of five new retail spaces at St Albans Station. These spaces will offer convenient shops and services in the heart of the redeveloped transport hub, providing improved transport connections and a unique place for people to socialise or visit while they wait for their bus or train.

Works on the new bus interchange will kick off next year.

Ruth Street pedestrian bridge

The new Ruth Street pedestrian bridge crossing opened to the community on Tuesday 20 December. Works for the crossing commenced in September with major construction through October and November. The structure required 21 supporting piles to build. You'll see more work on the bridge next year as we install screens and landscape the area.

Project stats

• 2188 tonnes of asphalt was laid at Main Road during November construction works blitz.
• 18,000 square metres of concrete was used to create the new rail corridor walls — that's more than the area of the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
• Over 1 million hours worked on the project to date.

Road works

Corner of Main Road East/St Albans Road

Toward the end of January, crews will be working during the day and occasionally at night to complete kerbing, asphalting and pavement works. No long term lane closures are planned as a result of these works but a single lane closure may be in place at times.

Main Road West and East intersections

Small crews will continue works in January and February to complete kerbs and footpaths, working after-hours at times to minimise disruptions. Vehicle and pedestrian access will be maintained.

McKechnie Street upgrade

Works will commence in February on the top section of McKechnie Street to install new kerbs, lay pavement and upgrade the road surface. Short term road closures will be in place at night. More community information will be sent out closer to the time of works.

Furlong Road/Willaton Street and Furlong Road/St Albans

Work will continue on the Furlong Road intersections in January and February to complete kerbs, footpaths and lighting. At times these works will be done after hours to minimise disruptions. Traffic management will be in place and any lane closures will be communicated in advance. Pedestrian access through to the station will be maintained.
