1 February 2016
What's happening
Construction is well progressed on the removal of Furlong Road level crossing. A big thanks to local commuters for their patience during the recent Sunbury Line closure.
There are more disruptions coming up in February with the closure of Furlong Road to put in the foundations for the new Ginifer Station and upgrade rail signalling. Furlong Road will be closed between Willaton Street and St Albans Road from 8pm on Thursday 18 February to 5am on Monday 22 February ;and we will be working 24 hours a day during the closure.
Willaton Street to Bond Avenue will also be closed during this time. Traffic detours will be in place via Station Street and McIntyre Road, with access to local businesses and properties maintained at all times via Clare Street.
Train services will not be affected during these works.
There will be another closure of Furlong Road in late March/April to construct the new bridge over the railway line – we'll give you more details closer to the time. The good news is that Main Road in St Albans will be open at all times when Furlong Road is closed.
The Victorian Government is removing 50 of Melbourne's dangerous and congested level crossings, including Furlong and Main Roads in St Albans. These projects will create a safer and more connected community.
Furlong Road news
In early January at Furlong Road, the project team worked approximately 2800 man hours on the level crossing removal including:
- The demolition of sections of the station buildings and the installation of hoarding on platform two.
- The installation of overhead structures.
- The construction of retaining walls to build the new Ginifer Station concourse and Mulhall Drive pedestrian bridge.
- The trenching works along the rail track and Kingsley Street to the M80 Ring Road St Albans.
In mid January, excavation and piling works began for the new station foundations.
A temporary car park is being constructed on the west side of St Albans Road between Elm and Aspen Streets. Safety barriers have been placed around the area. In March, when the car park is finished, motorists will be relocated from the east side of Willaton Street, between Ginifer Station and Curtain Street, to enable major excavation and rock breaking works to commence lowering the rail line.
As part of the bulk earthworks to lower the rail line, 110,000 cubic metres of soil and rock will be excavated on the north and south of Furlong Road and transported from the rail corridor.
The soil and rock will be removed from site in trucks from 7am Monday to Friday with the last truck being loaded at approximately 5pm. Material will also be removed on Saturdays between 7am and 3pm. Removal of soil is expected to take six months.
In February, 10 car spaces at Ginifer Station on St Albans Road will be temporarily closed to safely allow bore works.
Further trenching works will continue along the rail track, from the M80 Ring Road to Albion Station.
Main Road news
Thank you from the work crews at Main Road
It has certainly been a very busy start to 2016 for the Main Road Level Crossing Removal Project with the road closure at the level crossing for 19 days and rail occupation on the Sunbury Line for 6 days.
We appreciated your support and patience during these disruptions in the first few weeks of January while work crews worked around the clock to carry out: major excavation and rock breaking work for lowering the rail line; road works on West Esplanade; overhead track works between St Albans and Ginifer Stations as well as concreting and reinforcement to establish the Main Road bridge.
During these works our crews worked more than 39,000 man hours and excavated over 4500 cubic metres of soil which was over 450 truck loads that were removed off site. Crews have also poured approximately 28 truck loads of concrete for the bridge foundations.
What's coming up?
Development of new car spaces around St Albans Station
- The existing station car park on St Albans Road will be extended further south to create 74 new permanent car spaces. This work began in January and will run through February.
- A further 28 new permanent angled car spaces are being created on West Esplanade next to the current car park.
Underground services work
From 1 February for three weeks, drainage works will be carried out along Gratz Street and McKechnie Street. During these works, road speed limits will be reduced in non-peak traffic times and traffic management may be in place.
