Aircraft Station underpass and car park opening
The dangerous and congested level crossing at Aviation Road has been removed by building a new bridge over the rail line. The second phase of works involves building a new pedestrian and cyclist underpass, as well as 100 new and upgraded car spaces at Aircraft Station.
Works are almost complete at Aircraft Station, with the new pedestrian and cyclist underpass set to open at the end of February. Accessing Aircraft Station will be easier and safer for commuters.
Passengers coming from the south of the rail line can enter the underpass from the new station forecourt next to the upgraded car park. From the north, passengers will access the underpass via a new forecourt. The new well-lit connection at Aircraft Station is about 25 metres long, eight metres wide and three metres high. There will be three-metre-wide accessible ramps at both entrances, as well as centrally in the underpass for access to the platforms.
Natural light will filter into the underpass from the gaps between the train tracks overhead, and it will be well-lit at night with CCTV cameras for the safety of the community. The landscaping and garden beds will start taking shape in the coming months, with the addition of more than 350 new trees.
We’d like to thank the community for your patience during these works.
100 new and upgraded car parking spaces at Aircraft Station will be complete by the end of February, as part of the Car Parks for Commuters program. Once complete, a total of 138 car spaces will be available at Aircraft Station, along with CCTV cameras and lighting.
Travel changes
Buses will replace trains between Laverton and Werribee from 8.30pm Friday 18 February to last service Wednesday 23 February. Aircraft Station car park will close from 9pm Monday 14 February to 6am Thursday 24 February. Alternative parking is available at Laverton Station.
Urban design features
New station forecourts
The area around Aircraft Station will be revitalised with brand new station forecourts and landscaping that will complement the local area.
The new Aircraft Station forecourts will have features including: new seating areas, stairs and ramps, native trees, plants and shrubs, secure bike storage facilities and bike hoops.
Landscaping and vegetation
The Level Crossing Removal Project works with environment and sustainability specialists across all projects to minimise the amount of vegetation removal required, and to manage the impacts on flora and fauna.
More than 350 trees will be planted in the Aircraft Station forecourts. The new landscaping will be a mix of native and exotic plant species, which are drought-tolerant and consistent with landscaping in the local area.
- berry saltbush
- lemon beauty heads
- rolly polly correa
- ging gin gem
- blue chalksticks
- golden billy button
- tussock grass
- seaberry saltbush
We'll also plant a mixture of large trees including: drooping sheoak red flowering gum yellow box lightwood.
Pedestrian and cyclist access
A new shared use path will be completed along Maher Road. With improved accessibility and security, pedestrians and cyclists will have the option to cross the rail line using either the new underpass or the walking paths and bike lanes on the Maher Road bridge. A new secure bike storage facility with 26 spaces will also be installed, alongside 37 bike hoops – 10 in the northern forecourt and 27 in the southern forecourt.
What’s happening in the west?
We're removing 85 level crossings across Melbourne – with 56 already gone for good.
The level crossing on Old Geelong Road in Hoppers Crossing was removed in December 2021, with a new road bridge that directly connects Old Geelong Road to Princes Highway, creating safer and more reliable journeys.
The new overpass safely connecting pedestrians, cyclists and rail passengers over the rail line to Hoppers Crossing Station will open in late February, and we'll open new landscaped plazas on both sides of the rail line in the coming months.
The dangerous level crossing at Ferguson Street in Williamstown was also removed in December 2021 by building a new rail trench under the road, along with a new North Williamstown Station and an upgraded precinct for the community to enjoy. Finishing works on the new North Williamstown Station, as well as landscaping, will continue through this year.
We’re removing the level crossing at Mt Derrimut Road in Deer Park by elevating the rail line over the road and building a brand-new Deer Park Station. Major construction will begin in mid 2022, while works continue at the nearby Fitzgerald Road and Robinsons Road level crossings. When all three level crossings are removed by 2024, the Geelong and Ballarat lines will be level crossing free between Deer Park and the city.
