Works complete at Aviation Road

New pedestrian and cyclist underpass and car parks at Aircraft Station now open

The new pedestrian and cyclist underpass and car parks are open at Aircraft Station. Newly landscaped open spaces are also available for the community to enjoy in the station precinct.

The new underpass connects Aircraft Station to Maher Road and Aviation Road. The 8 metre wide, well-lit and open underpass can be accessed by stairs and ramps on both sides of the rail line.

The station precinct also has 2 new landscaped forecourts and 100 new and upgraded car parks as part of the Car Parks for Commuters program.

Completion of these works follows removal of the level crossing, with a new road bridge built over the rail line, reducing congestion for thousands of motorists every day.

Why this level crossing had to go

  • 7000 vehicles travel along Aviation Road every day
  • Boom gates were down for 35% of the morning peak
  • 7 near misses at the level crossing between 2004 and 2014

Thank you, Laverton!

We'd like to thank the community for your patience during these works.

More level crossings to go in the west

Along with Aviation Road in Laverton, Old Geelong Road in Hoppers Crossing and Ferguson Street in Williamstown are among the most recently completed level crossing removal projects in Melbourne's west.

Melbourne’s 65th level crossing has been removed at Fitzgerald Road in Ardeer, and the nearby Robinsons Road level crossing will follow in September, months ahead of schedule.

Major works have now begun at Mt Derrimut Road in Deer Park, where we are removing the level crossing by raising the rail line over the road. We'll also build a new Deer Park Station.
