We're getting rid of all the level crossings on the Werribee Line by 2030. With no level crossings on the train line, journeys will be faster and local roads safer.
We’re removing the level crossing at Maidstone Street, Altona and building a new road bridge over the rail line. This will create better connections for the busy industrial area and avoid impacts to important utilities.
When the Metro Tunnel opens, more trains will run more often, meaning even longer delays when the boom gates are down. Removing this level crossing will boost safety and reduce congestion on the busy Werribee Line.
Over the coming months, we’re carrying out further site investigations and planning to confirm the best design for the new bridge.
We’ll share more information next year about how you can get involved with the project, what’s happening in the area and project timelines.
We're removing the Maidstone Street level crossing by 2027.
Why these level crossings need to go
- 14,400 vehicles go through the crossing each day
- 48 trains use the crossing in the morning peak (7am– 9am)
- Boom gates are down for 21% of the morning peak (7am – 9am)
- Werribee Line level crossing free by 2030
Thank you for completing our local trader survey
In September and October this year, we shared a local trader survey with businesses in the area. Thank you to everyone who completed this survey.
This information helps us understand local business needs, which informs design development. If you have not completed a survey but would like a copy, please get in touch with us on 1800 105 105 or email us at contact@levelcrossings.vic.gov.au.
Upcoming site investigations
Site investigations will continue in the area until February 2024.
During this time we’ll:
- Complete traffic surveys on Maidstone Street and adjacent roads.
- Carry out land and utility surveying across the site and rail corridor.
- Conduct environmental assessments.
While we work, you may notice:
- Construction crews, vehicles, and equipment in the area.
- Low to moderate noise levels.
- Workers in the rail corridor after hours. We don't anticipate works to be disruptive.
We’ll be working Monday to Friday, 7am to 6pm, with some out of hours works required at times.
At times, traffic management may be in place to help you move safely through the area.
