We’re removing the level crossing at Maidstone Street, Altona, by building a new road bridge over the rail line to improve safety and create better connections, including to the new West Gate Tunnel.

Works on the project are now well underway, with major construction starting this month.

Reminder: Upcoming road closures and rail disruptions

  • Maidstone Street closure: 8pm, 13 November – 6am, 17 November
  • Ajax Road/Maidstone Street intersection closure: 13 November – mid 2027

Ajax Road and Slough Road temporary parking changes

We’re closing Ajax Road at the Maidstone Street intersection from 8pm Thursday 13 November until mid-2027.

Vehicles entering or exiting Ajax Road will be detoured via Slough Road and a new temporary road connection between Slough Road and Ajax Road. This new road connection will be suitable for heavy vehicles.

To ensure vehicles can move around the area safely, temporary on-street parking changes will be in place along Ajax Road and Slough Road from 8pm Thursday 13 November until mid-2027. Please follow parking signs and see map overleaf for changes.

Changed conditions on Maidstone Street

From Monday 17 November until mid-2027, changed traffic conditions will be in place on Maidstone Street. This will include reduced lane width, reduced speed limits, temporary traffic lights and traffic management. Please follow all signage and travel safely when moving through the area. These changes will allow us to keep traffic moving while we build the new road bridge.

Works in November

  • Ground compaction works to create a level surface where heavy equipment can operate safely during bridge foundation works.
  • Waste material removal around the project area, in line with strict health and safety guidelines.

Underground service relocation works

To make way for the new road bridge, we need to relocate underground power, gas, sewer, water and telecommunication services along Maidstone Street and surrounding roads.

We are working closely with service providers and will endeavour to keep you informed about what to expect during these works. Service providers will communicate with properties and customers directly if services, or access, may be affected.
