We’re removing the level crossing at Maidstone Street, Altona, by building a new road bridge over the rail line to improve safety and create better connections, including to the new West Gate Tunnel.
Works on the project are now well underway, with major construction starting this month.
Maidstone Street closure
We’re closing Maidstone Street from 8pm, Thursday 13 November until 6am, Monday 17 November (day and night) between Slough Road and north of the Maidstone Street level crossing while the Werribee Line is closed.
Heavy vehicles larger than a 19m semi-trailer will be granted access through the level crossing under direction of traffic controllers. Delays of up to 60 minutes may be experienced at times. Please allow extra travel time.
Detours for all other vehicles will be via Kororoit Creek Road, Millers Road and Civic Parade or via Kororoit Creek Road, Princes Freeway, Central Avenue and Queen Street. Please see the maps below.
Access to businesses on Ajax Road, Slough Road, Jordan Close and Maidstone Street will be maintained under traffic management.
There will be no pedestrian access over the rail line along Maidstone Street during these works.

Ajax Road/Maidstone Street intersection closure
We’re closing Ajax Road at the Maidstone Street intersection from 8pm, Thursday 13 November until mid 2027.
Vehicles entering or exiting Ajax Road will be detoured via Slough Road and a new temporary road connection between Slough Road and Ajax Road. This new road connection will be suitable for heavy vehicles. See map below.
Some on-street parking on Ajax Road will be temporarily removed during the closure.

Werribee Line closure and Altona Loop service changes
Rail closure and out of hours works
Buses will replace trains on the Werribee Line from 8.30pm, Thursday 13 November until last service, Sunday 16 November. Visit Transport Victoria for more information.
During this time, we’ll work both day and night to install road barriers on Maidstone Street and relocate the boom gates to safely delineate our work areas. Light towers will be in place around the work site at night. Noise and vibration levels are not expected to be highly disruptive.
Altona Loop service changes
To keep the Werribee Line moving while we undertake major construction, trains will run on a single track between Newport and Laverton from Monday 17 November to late April 2026. Running the trains in this way allows us to minimise disruption and ensures most passengers won’t need to take rail replacement buses.
All trains to the City will not stop at Seaholme, Altona and Westona stations. Passengers travelling to the City will need to take a shuttle bus to Newport Station for a connecting train service. All trains to Werribee will continue to stop at Seaholme, Altona and Westona stations.
Werribee Line trains will also run to an altered timetable during this time. Visit Transport Victoria for more information.
Changed conditions on Maidstone Street
From Monday 17 November until mid 2027, changed traffic conditions will be in place on Maidstone Street. This will include reduced lane width, reduced speed limits, temporary traffic lights and traffic management. Please follow all signage and travel safely when moving through the area. These changes will allow us to keep traffic moving while we build the new road bridge.
