We’re getting rid of the level crossing at Maidstone Street, Altona, to improve safety and create better connections in the suburb. The Werribee Line will be boom gate free by 2030.

At Maidstone Street, the level crossing will be removed by building a road bridge to avoid impacting important utilities and provide the best connections for this industrial area.

Removing the level crossing at Maidstone Street will reduce congestion for the 14,400 vehicles that use the crossing each day, with the boom gates currently down for more than 20% of the morning peak.

When the Metro Tunnels opens in 2025 – a year ahead of schedule – more trains will be running on the Werribee Line. If the boom gates remained at this location, the road would become gridlocked, especially during the peak.

By building the new road bridge, travel times will be reduced, and safety improved for locals and industrial businesses.

The level crossing will be gone for good in 2027.
