W're removing the level crossing at Maidstone Street, Altona by building a road bridge over the Werribee Line.
Building a road bridge avoids impacts to important utilities and provides the best connections for this industrial area.
Removing this level crossing will reduce congestion for the 14,400 vehicles that use the crossing each day, with the boom gates currently down for more than 20% of the morning peak.
When the Metro Tunnels opens in 2025 – a year ahead of schedule – more trains will be running on the Werribee Line. If the boom gates remained at this location, the road would become gridlocked, especially during the peak.
Planned timeline
The Maidstone Street level crossing will be gone for good in 2027, and the Werribee Line will be level crossing free by 2030.
