The Level Crossing Removal Project (LXRP) was established by the Victorian Government to oversee one of the largest rail infrastructure projects in the state's history.

LXRP is part of the Major Transport Infrastructure Authority and our projects fall under Victoria’s Big Build.

Central to the project is the elimination of 110 level crossings across metropolitan Melbourne by 2030, in addition to other rail network upgrades such as new train stations, track duplication and train stabling yards.

Benefits

Some of the core benefits that come from removing a level crossing are:

  • improving safety, by removing the danger of trains sharing a crossing with vehicles and other users
  • reducing congestion, by eliminating frustrating delays caused by boom gates and allowing more vehicles to pass through
  • improving travel time reliability, by removing uncertainty around when boom gate closures will occur and how long they will be down for
  • increasing capacity to run more trains on the network, without boom gates delaying vehicles and other users.

There are also other opportunities to add value for the community and commuters depending on the chosen design at each site, such as creating new open space, building new shared use walking and cycling paths or commissioning public artwork.

Our projects strive to improve the accessibility, amenity and functionality of the area around them to leave a positive legacy for years to come.
