We’re getting rid of the level crossing at Maidstone Street, Altona to improve safety and create better connections in the suburb. The Werribee Line will be boom gate free by 2030.

What is happening

Maidstone Street will be closed at night to through traffic between Slough Road and north of the Maidstone Street level crossing between 7pm and 6am, Tuesday 8 July to Friday 11 July.

How will this impact oversize and over mass (OSOM) vehicles

Some roads along the detour route are designated as restricted for certain oversize and over mass (OSOM) vehicles. These restrictions are in place to protect road infrastructure, ensure public safety and manage potential community impacts.

To comply with regulations and reduce the impacts on stakeholder business operations, some OSOM vehicles will be granted access through the overnight road closure if access is required.

Oversize and over mass (OSOM) vehicles larger than a 19m semi-trailer are not permitted to travel through the designated detour route.

Any vehicles larger than a 19m semi-trailer which require access to Maidstone Street between the rail line and Slough Road during the road closure, will need to enter Maidstone Street from Kororoit Creek Road and approach the traffic controllers.

Vehicles will be escorted through the road closure by a traffic controller. Depending on the construction activity at the time there may be delays of up to 30 minutes.

All other vehicles will be required to detour via Kororoit Creek Road, Millers Road and Civic Parade or via Kororoit Creek Road, Princes Freeway, Central Avenue and Queen Street.

What to expect

General working hours are Monday to Friday between 7am and 6pm and Saturday between 7am and 3pm. Some out of hours works may be required at times.

Temporary traffic management, including intermittent lane closures and reduced speed limits will be in place.

Increased construction noise and activity, with vehicles and workers moving around the area.
