7 August 2025
We’re getting rid of the level crossing at Maidstone Street, Altona to improve safety and create better connections in the suburb. The Werribee Line will be boom gate free by 2030.
We’re starting works to remove the level crossing at Maidstone Street by building a road bridge over the rail line. Early works are underway, with major construction set to begin in the coming months.
Ajax Road intersection closure postponement
As previously notified, to allow our team to construct the new road bridge across the rail line, we need to temporarily close Ajax Road at the Maidstone Street intersection.
Due to changes to our program, the Ajax Road/Maidstone Street intersection closure will no longer take place from Friday 15 August. We will provide a new date for the closure in due course.
Please note that the Maidstone Street overnight closures from Friday 15 August to Sunday 17 August will proceed as below when the Werribee Line is closed.
Maidstone Street overnight closure
Maidstone Street will be closed to traffic between Slough Road and north of the level crossing from Friday 15 August to Sunday 17 August, 8pm to 6am each night while we work overnight to install concrete road barriers and change line marking.
- Access to businesses will be maintained under traffic management.
- Vehicles larger than a semi-trailer and emergency services will be granted access through the road closure at the level crossing via traffic control escort.
- All other vehicles to detour via Kororoit Creek Road, Millers Road and Civic Parade (map 1) or via Kororoit Creek Road, Princes Freeway, Central Avenue and Queen Street (map 2).
Werribee Line closure
Buses replace trains on sections of the Werribee Line from Friday 15 August to Monday 18 August.
Out of hours works
From 8pm, Friday 15 August to 6am, Sunday 17 August we’ll work 24/7 to complete critical works around the rail line and along Maidstone Street.
During these works, noise and vibration levels are not expected to be highly disruptive, traffic management, construction vehicles and light towers will be in place. There may be other out of hours works required throughout August, we will work with directly impacted stakeholder.
Other works in August
- Road construction works along Slough Road and Ajax Road in preparation for the detour route.
- Tree and vegetation removal along Maidstone Street and in the surrounding area – this will take place in stages throughout August.
- Waste material removal from the rail reserve in line with strict health and safety guidelines.
Underground service relocation works
To make way for the new road bridge, we need to relocate underground power, gas, water and telecommunication services along Maidstone Street and surrounding roads. We are working closely with service providers and will endeavour to keep you informed about what to expect during these works. Service providers will communicate with properties and customers directly if services or access may be affected.
What to expect
- Normal working hours are Monday to Friday between 7am and 6pm and Saturday between 7am and 3pm with some out of hours works necessary for road works.
- Reduced speed limits and traffic management will be in place around our work areas.
- Increase in construction vehicles, delivery trucks and machinery moving around the area.
- During some activities you may notice an increase in construction noise, vibration and dust.
