We’re getting rid of the level crossing at Maidstone Street, Altona to improve safety and create better connections in the suburb. The Werribee Line will be boom gate free by 2030.

We’re starting works to remove the level crossing at Maidstone Street by building a road bridge over the rail line. Early works are underway, with major construction set to begin in the coming months.

Maidstone Street road closure: 8 - 11 July (nights only)

Maidstone Street will be closed to traffic between Slough Road and north of the Maidstone Street level crossing between 7pm and 6am from Tuesday 8 July to Friday 11 July.

Vehicles larger than a semi-trailer and emergency services will be granted access through the road closure at the level crossing via traffic control escort. Access to businesses will be maintained under traffic management. Read more about the road closure oversize and over mass (OSOM) here.

All other vehicles will need to detour via Kororoit Creek Road, Millers Road and Civic Parade or via Kororoit Creek Road, Princes Freeway, Central Avenue and Queen Street. Please see detour maps.

July works

Throughout July, we will:

  • continue road construction works along Slough Road and Ajax Road in preparation for the detour route
  • install temporary traffic management controls and line marking along Maidstone Street
  • continue tree and vegetation removal along Maidstone Street and in the surrounding area - this will take place in stages until August
  • remove waste material from the rail reserve in line with strict health and safety guidelines
  • relocate underground services and utilities along Maidstone Street and surrounding roads. Service providers will communicate directly with any impacted properties and customers during this time.

Road closure and night works

Maidstone Street will be closed to traffic between Slough Road and north of the Maidstone Street level crossing between 7pm and 6am from Tuesday 8 July to Friday 11 July.  During this time, we’ll work overnight to install temporary traffic management systems on Maidstone Street to safely delineate our work areas.

Vehicles larger than a semi-trailer, and emergency services, will be granted access through the road closure at the level crossing via traffic control escort.

Access to businesses wil be maintained under traffic management.

All other vehicles will need to detour via Kororoit Creek Road, Millers Road and Civic Parade or via Kororoit Creek Road, Princes Freeway, Central Avenue and Queen Street. Please see the detour maps.

During these works, noise and vibration levels are not expected to be highly disruptive, traffic management and light towers will be in place.

Weather or unforeseen circumstances may impact our progress. If the above dates change, we will communicate this in advance.

What to expect

  • Normal working hours are Monday to Friday between 7am and 6pm and Saturday between 7am and 3pm
  • Reduced speed limits and traffic management will be in place around our work areas
  • Increase in construction vehicles, delivery trucks and machinery moving around the area
  • Some on-street parking at Ajax Road will be temporarily removed to ensure there is enough room for large trucks to travel through the area safely
  • There may be additional out of hours works and road disruptions throughout July, we will communicate these ahead of time if required
  • During some activities you may notice an increase in construction noise, vibration and dust
