We’re getting rid of the level crossing at Maidstone Street, Altona, to improve safety and create better connections in the suburb. The Werribee Line will be boom gate free by 2030.

What we’re doing

We’re getting ready to remove the level crossing at Maidstone Street by building a road bridge over the rail line.

Throughout June, we will:

  • continue setting up our main site office north of the rail line and smaller offices and storage areas south of the rail line, including within the median on Slough Road near the intersection of Maidstone Street
  • begin road and kerb modification works along Slough Road and Ajax Road
  • remove waste material, including asbestos, in line with strict health and safety guidelines
  • continue tree and vegetation removal as required along Maidstone Street and in the surrounding area. This will take place in stages until August 2025.

There will be a temporary road closure in July at the intersection of Ajax Road and Maidstone Street. Works will be after hours and we will provide details closer to the time.

Underground service relocation works

  • To make way for the new road bridge, we need to relocate underground power, gas, water and telecommunication services along Maidstone Street and surrounding roads. Service providers will communicate directly with any impacted properties and customers during these works.

What to expect

  • General working hours are Monday to Friday between 7am and 6pm and Saturday between 7am and 3pm.
  • Reduced speed limits and traffic management will be in place around our work areas.
  • Local footpath closures may be implemented at times, please follow directional signage.
  • Increase in construction vehicles, delivery trucks and machinery moving around the area.
  • During some activities you may notice an increase in construction noise, vibration and dust.
