29 April 2025
We’re getting rid of the level crossing at Maidstone Street, Altona to improve safety and create better connections in the suburb. The Werribee Line will be boom gate free by 2030.
What we're doing
We’re getting ready to remove the level crossing at Maidstone Street, by building a road bridge over the rail line.
In May, we’ll work to set up our site and prepare the area for major construction.
Works include:
- Setting up site offices and project storage areas north and south of the rail line, including installation of temporary fencing and gates for access.
- Ongoing site investigation works in preparation for underground service relocation and major works.
- Removing waste material, including asbestos, within the works area that was discovered during recent site investigation works. This is not uncommon and we’re preparing to remove it in line with strict health and safety guidelines.
Tree and vegetation removal
To enable us to build the new road bridge, some tree and vegetation removal is required along Maidstone Street and in the surrounding area. This will take place in stages from late April to August.
Careful planning is undertaken to minimise tree removal and reduce impacts to local flora and fauna.
Out of hours works
From 7pm, Friday 23 May until 3am, Monday 26 May, our team will work during the day and night to install safety barriers and fencing around the rail line. During this time, buses will replace trains on the Werribee Line.
What to expect
- General working hours are Monday to Friday between 7am and 6pm and Saturday between 7am and 3pm.
- Reduced speed limits and traffic management will be in place around our work areas.
- Local footpath closures may be implemented at times, please follow directional signage.
- Increase in construction vehicles, delivery trucks and machinery moving through the area.
- Increase in construction noise, vibration and dust. Our team will have controls in place to reduce and monitor these impacts.
