We’re removing the dangerous and congested level crossing at Maidstone Street, Altona, by building a new road bridge over the rail line to improve safety and create better connections, including to the new West Gate Tunnel.

We’re starting works to remove the level crossing at Maidstone Street by building a road bridge over the rail line. Early works are underway, with major construction set to begin in the coming months.

Works in the area throughout October

Throughout October we will:

  • continue road construction works along Slough Road and Ajax Road, in preparation for the detour route once Ajax Road closes at the Maidstone Street intersection.
  • begin clearing and compacting the ground near our site office on Maidstone Street to create a level surface where heavy equipment can operate safely during bridge foundation works.
  • remove waste material around the project area, in line with strict health and safety guidelines.
  • carry out works in the rail corridor after hours from Monday 6 October to Friday 10 October. These works are not expected to be noisy, but there may be traffic management in place at times.

Underground service relocation works

To make way for the new road bridge, we need to relocate underground power, gas, sewer, water and telecommunication services along Maidstone Street and surrounding roads.

We are working closely with service providers and will endeavour to keep you informed about what to expect during these works. Service providers will communicate with properties and customers directly if services, or access, may be affected.

What to expect

  • Normal working hours are Monday to Friday between 7am and 6pm and Saturday between 7am and 3pm.
  • Reduced speed limits and traffic management will be in place around our work areas, resulting in minor delays at times. Please follow all directional signage and travel safely when moving through the area.
  • Some out of hours works may be required in October, we will communicate with directly impacted stakeholders ahead of time.
  • Increase in construction vehicles, delivery trucks and machinery moving around the area.
  • During some activities you may notice an increase in construction noise, vibration and dust.
