We’re removing the dangerous and congested level crossing at Maidstone Street, Altona by building a new road bridge over the rail line to improve safety and create better connections, including to the new West Gate Tunnel.

We’re starting works to remove the level crossing at Maidstone Street by building a road bridge over the rail line. Early works are underway, with major construction set to begin in the coming months.

Works in the area throughout September

During September, we will:

  • Continue road construction works along Slough Road and Ajax Road, in preparation for the detour route once Ajax Road closes at the Maidstone Street intersection.
  • Remove waste material around the project area, in line with strict health and safety guidelines.

Underground service relocation works

To make way for the new road bridge, we need to relocate underground power, gas, sewer, water and telecommunication services along Maidstone Street and surrounding roads.

We are working closely with service providers and will endeavour to keep you informed about what to expect during these works. Service providers will communicate with properties and customers directly if services, or access, may be affected.

What to expect

  • Normal working hours are Monday to Friday between 7am and 6pm and Saturday between 7am and 3pm.
  • Some out of hours works may be required in September, we will communicate with directly impacted stakeholders ahead of time.
  • Reduced speed limits and traffic management will be in place around our work areas, resulting in minor delays at times. Please follow all directional signage and travel safely when moving through the area.
  • Increase in construction vehicles, delivery trucks and machinery moving around the area.
  • During some activities you may notice an increase in construction noise, vibration and dust.
