We’re removing the Maddox Road and Champion Road level crossings to make Newport level crossing free in 2026 – improving safety and creating more reliable travel times.

Major works on the passenger rail bridges over Maddox Road, pedestrian and cycling bridge over Champion Road and Akuna Drive link road are now complete. We’ve also opened 50 new car parking spaces on Park Crescent to support businesses and the local community.

What we’re doing

In August and September, we’ll continue with major construction works:

  • Freight rail bridge construction, including track and rail infrastructure installation
  • Finishing works on the pedestrian and cycling bridge
  • Building the walking and cycling path along Market Street and Railway Parade
  • Removing hardstand and pipeline protection slabs used for construction of the passenger rail bridges and pedestrian bridge
  • Landscaping throughout the project area
  • Minor finishing works on Kororoit Creek Road, Akuna Drive, Launceston Street and Park Crescent
  • Removing waste material where required, in line with strict health and safety guidelines.

Major road impacts

Maddox Road will be closed from 6am, Friday 28 August until 7pm, Tuesday 15 September.

During this time, we’ll:

  • Finish building the freight rail bridge
  • Remove the at-grade freight rail line
  • Complete drainage works on Maddox Road between Railway Parade and Macaulay Street
  • Build the cycling and walking path next to the Maddox Road rail bridges
  • Resurface and line mark Maddox Road and Railway Parade

We’ll work 24/7 from Saturday 22 August until Tuesday 15 September throughout the project area.We’ll be in touch with directly impacted residents and traders.

Road

Challis Street

  • Increase in construction traffic on Challis Street between Jubilee Street and Railway Parade until late 2026.

Maddox Road

  • Closed between Railway Parade and Macaulay Street from 6am, Friday 28 August until 7pm, Tuesday 15 September.

Railway Parade

  • Closed between Maddox Road and Revo Street from 6am, Friday 28 August until 7pm, Tuesday 15 September.
  • Changed traffic conditions between Challis Street to Maddox Road from Monday 3 August until Friday 14 August.
  • Closed between Challis Street and Maddox Road from Monday 7 September until Saturday 12 September.

Rail

Werribee Line

  • Buses replace trains between North Melbourne, Werribee and Williamstown from 11.30pm, Friday 28 to 5am, Sunday 30 August.
  • Buses replace trains between Newport and Werribee from 5am, Sunday 30 to last service, Monday 31 August.

  • Works from 7am until 7pm Monday to Saturday unless otherwise stated
  • Reduced speed limits and traffic management
  • Minor traffic and parking impacts on Kororoit Creek Road, Akuna Drive, Launceston Street and Park Crescent
  • Temporary impacts to footpaths and on-street parking
  • An increase in construction noise, vibration and dust.
