We’re removing the Maddox Road and Champion Road, Newport level crossings by building rail bridges over Maddox Road and closing Champion Road at the rail line.
Champion Road is now closed permanently to vehicles. To keep locals moving around the area, we’ve extended Akuna Drive to connect Champion Road to Maddox Road and installed a new pedestrian and cycling bridge at Champion Road.
Two passenger rail bridges are now complete and taking trains over Maddox Road, with works underway on the final rail bridge, ready for freight trains in late 2026.
Removing these level crossings will improve safety and create more reliable travel times.
Planned timeline
Major construction is underway to make Newport level crossing free in 2026.
Once we remove these level crossings, we’ll have 3 more to go to make the Werribee Line boom gate free by 2030.
