We’re building rail bridges over Maddox Road and closing Champion Road at the rail line. To keep locals moving, we’re extending Akuna Drive to connect Champion Road to Maddox Road.
This new link road will make it safer and easier for drivers to travel through Newport and Williamstown and will open before Champion Road closes in 2026.
As part of the project, we’ll also build a new pedestrian and cycling bridge over the rail line at Champion Road to keep the community connected.
We’ll make it safer for people to cross the rail line at Maddox Road and upgrade local walking and cycling connections.
Planned timeline
Final designs have been released, and major construction is underway to make Newport level crossing free in 2026. You can view the final renders in our latest image gallery.
Once we remove these level crossings, we’ll have 3 more to go to make the Werribee Line boom gate free by 2030.
