Works ramp up in Newport

Back to Newsfeed

Newport will be boom gate free next year, with a recent weekend construction blitz allowing workers to complete critical work ahead of major construction later this year.

Crews worked 24/7 inspecting signalling on the Werribee Line, installing site fencing and traffic barriers on Maddox Road, and constructing hardstand areas on site.

The northbound lane of Maddox Road will remain closed at the level crossing until mid July. Detours will be in place during this time to keep traffic moving safely through the area and to get people to where they need to go.

We’re building rail bridges over Maddox Road and closing Champion Road at the rail line. To keep traffic moving, we’re extending Akuna Drive to connect Champion Road to a level crossing free Maddox Road.

This new road will make it safer and easier for drivers to travel through Newport and Williamstown and will open before Champion Road is closed in 2026.

As part of the project, we’ll also build a new pedestrian and cycling bridge over the rail line at Champion Road to keep the community connected.

Both level crossings will be gone for good in 2026, paving the way for the Werribee Line to be level crossing free by 2030, transforming the way locals live, work, and travel.
