We’re removing the Maddox Road and Champion Road level crossings to make Newport level crossing free in 2026 – improving safety and creating more reliable travel times.

Major works on the passenger rail bridges over Maddox Road, the pedestrian and cycling bridge over Champion Road and Akuna Drive link road are now complete. We’ve also opened 50 new car parking spaces on Park Crescent to support businesses and the local community.

What we’re doing

In June, we’ll continue with major construction works, including:

  • Cul-de-sac construction on either side of Champion Road.
  • Freight rail bridge construction, building piers, retaining walls, embankments, and installing beams.
  • Finishing works on the pedestrian and cycling bridge.
  • Continuing to build the Market Street Reserve walking and cycling path.
  • Removing vegetation and waste material where required, in line with strict health and safety guidelines.

Out of hours works

Throughout June, we’ll work 24-hours in parts of the project area. We’ll be in touch with directly impacted residents and traders about what this means for them.

Major road impacts

Maddox Road will be closed between Macaulay Street and Railway Parade:

  • 7am, Thursday 18 June to 7am, Monday 22 June
  • 7pm to 7am, Tuesday 23 June to Saturday 27 June
  • 7am, Saturday 27 June to 7am, Sunday 28 June

During this time, we’ll install the freight line bridge beams over Maddox Road.

Changes to the way you travel

We’ll make every effort to complete works on schedule. However, dates may change due to weather and other factors outside our control. Please monitor traffic signage in the area for updates.

Road

Challis Street

  • Increase in construction traffic on Challis Street between Jubilee Street and Railway Parade until late 2026.

Champion Road

  • Changed traffic conditions and access to 199 Champion Road until late 2026.
  • Partial roundabout closure for one day in mid-June. Detour in place for northbound traffic approaching the roundabout from Market Street.

Maddox Road

  • Road closed between Macaulay Street and Railway Parade:
    • 7am, Thursday 18 June to 7am, Monday 22 June
    • 7pm to 7am, Tuesday 23 June to Saturday 27 June
    • 7am, Saturday 27 June to 7am, Sunday 28 June

Railway Parade

  • Road closed between Maddox Road and Berty Street from Monday 15 June to Wednesday 1 July.

Rail

Werribee line

  • Train testing continuing on the Werribee Line, with temporary service changes until late June 2026. Check Transport Victoria for the latest information.

Pedestrian

Maddox Road

  • Footpath closure between Akuna Drive Link Road and Albermarle Street from Monday 1 June to Friday 5 June.

What to expect

  • 24-hour works Monday to Saturday during June.
  • Reduced speed limits, traffic management and temporary impacts to on-street parking.
  • Temporary impacts to footpaths and pedestrian detours.
  • An increase in construction noise, vibration and dust.
