We’ve removed the Maddox Road and Champion Road level crossings to make Newport level crossing free – improving safety and creating more reliable travel times.

Major works on the passenger rail bridges over Maddox Road, pedestrian and cycling bridge over Champion Road and Akuna Drive link road are now complete. We’ve also opened 50 new car parking spaces on Park Crescent to support businesses and the local community.

What we’re doing

In October, we’ll continue with minor works including:

  • Finishing the walking and cycling paths along Railway Parade and within the rail corridor between Maddox Road and Ross Road.
  • Landscaping throughout the project area, including building a new play space at AJ Fine Reserve.
  • Demobilising the fuel pipeline bridge and closing site access at Churchill Street.
  • Removing hardstand and reinstating areas around the rail corridor.
  • Installing new rail corridor fencing.

Landscaping works and AJ Fine Reserve

Landscaping works are progressing throughout the project area. From mid-October, we’ll also begin building a new play space at AJ Fine Reserve, including:

  • Garden beds and landscaping.
  • Benches and nature play equipment.
  • A footpath to access these new facilities.

During this time, we’ll install temporary fencing within the reserve to safely carry out these works.

Changes to the way you travel

We’ll make every effort to complete works on schedule. However, dates may change due to weather and other factors outside our control. Please monitor traffic signage in the area for updates. Sign up for SMS and email updates to stay informed.

Road

Champion Road

  • Footpath closure from mid-October to late November. Detour via Fowler Crescent.

Maddox Road

  • Intermittent trafiic delays at off-peak times and restricted pedestrian access across Maddox Road for on day in mid October.

Rosshire Road and Blenheim Road

  • Traffic impacts and reduced lane widths until Tuesday 13 October. Ross Road car park access maintained. Pedestrian access maintained.

Churchill Street

  • Increased truck and crane movements causing traffic delays for one week in mid-October.

What to expect

  • Works from 7am until 7pm Monday to Saturday unless otherwise stated.
  • Reduced speed limits and traffic management.
  • Minor traffic and parking impacts on Kororoit Creek Road, Akuna Drive, Launceston Street and Park Crescent.
  • Temporary impacts to footpaths and on-street parking.
  • An increase in construction noise, vibration and dust.
