About Melbourne Airport Rail

Melbourne Airport Rail is a transformational public transport project connecting Melbourne Airport to Victoria’s regional and metropolitan train network for the first time.

The Australian and Victorian governments have agreed that Melbourne Airport Rail will run on dedicated, new tracks from a new premium station at Melbourne Airport to Sunshine Station, where it will then travel through the Metro Tunnel into the heart of the CBD before continuing on to the Cranbourne and Pakenham lines.

The final project budget will be confirmed once all major contracts are awarded, with construction to begin in 2022 and a target opening date for Melbourne Airport Rail of 2029.

This solution delivers the best connections from Melbourne Airport to the regions and suburbs for all Victorians with 10 minute turn-up-and-go services, easy transfers to regional lines and trips into the heart of the CBD in under 30 minutes.

As well as connecting people to and from the airport, Melbourne Airport Rail connects passengers to Melbourne’s key health, research and education, development, employment and tourism precincts.

Bendigo and Echuca Line Upgrade

Melbourne Airport Rail builds on the significant investment the Victorian Government has made on the Bendigo and Echuca lines.

The Bendigo and Echuca Line Upgrade includes:

  • new stations at Goornong, Huntly and Raywood
  • a modernised electronic train order (ETO) system
  • 10 level crossing improvements between Bendigo and Eaglehawk
  • track upgrades between Epsom and Echuca
  • a business case for track upgrades between Bendigo and Kyneton to deliver trains every 40 minutes in the off-peak
  • a planning study for the reopening of Harcourt Station
