About Melbourne Airport Rail

Melbourne Airport Rail is a transformational public transport project connecting Melbourne Airport to Victoria’s regional and metropolitan train network for the first time.

The Australian and Victorian governments have agreed that Melbourne Airport Rail will run on dedicated, new tracks from a new premium station at Melbourne Airport to Sunshine Station, where it will then travel through the Metro Tunnel into the heart of the CBD before continuing on to the Cranbourne and Pakenham lines.

The final project budget will be confirmed once all major contracts are awarded, with construction to begin in 2022 and a target opening date for Melbourne Airport Rail of 2029.

This solution delivers the best connections from Melbourne Airport to the regions and suburbs for all Victorians with 10 minute turn-up-and-go services, easy transfers to regional lines and trips into the heart of the CBD in under 30 minutes.

As well as connecting people to and from the airport, Melbourne Airport Rail connects passengers to Melbourne’s key health, research and education, development, employment and tourism precincts.

Upgrading the Geelong Line

Melbourne Airport Rail builds on the significant investment the Australian and Victorian governments are making on the Geelong Line to deliver more frequent and reliable services for passengers on Victoria’s busiest regional rail line.

Upgrades to the Geelong Line include:

  • upgrading Waurn Ponds Station with a second platform, pedestrian overpass and extra car parking
  • additional track at Waurn Ponds Station to allow trains to pass each other
  • Armstrong Creek transit corridor planning
  • the South Geelong to Waurn Ponds Duplication, including level crossing removals at Surf Coast Highway and Fyans Street, station upgrades at Marshall and South Geelong, and track duplication between South Geelong and Waurn Ponds stations
  • stabling for VLocity trains at Waurn Ponds.
