A new superhub for Sunshine Station
We're transforming rail travel in Melbourne's west, with a major redevelopment of Sunshine Station to enable more trains, more often and pave the way for a future rail line to Melbourne Airport and an electrified Melton Line.
The new superhub will untangle Melbourne’s most complex rail junction outside the CBD, adding two new platforms that will unlock extra capacity for additional services for the growing communities of Melton and Wyndham Vale, and to the airport.
The more than $4 billion joint investment by the Australian and Victorian governments will involve works spanning more than 6km from West Footscray to Albion.
Delivering upgrades at Sunshine Station now will drastically reduce future disruptions for both the Melbourne Airport Rail and Melton Line electrification projects that will follow.
We’ll also rebuild Albion Station, providing a brand-new modern and accessible station funded by the Victorian Government.
When works are complete by 2030, more trains will be able travel through Sunshine every hour during the weekday peaks, providing improved access to Melbourne’s CBD through the new Metro Tunnel.
The new superhub will also make Sunshine Station the gateway to Melbourne’s booming west and Victoria’s regions, while enabling construction of an essential rail link to Melbourne Airport. Works on the new superhub at Sunshine Station will commence in early 2026.
