New Tottenham and Albion stations – online information session questions and answers

We’re building new modern and accessible Tottenham and Albion stations as part of the Melbourne Airport Rail Stage 1: West Footscray to Albion Rail Upgrade, delivering more trains, more often for passengers across Melbourne’s west.

Tottenham Station

The new Tottenham station will feature a new underpass from Rupert Street to Sunshine Road, separated from Ashley Street, with lifts and stairs to access the platforms. This new connection will make it easier and safer for passengers to access the station and activity centres on both sides of the rail line.

Early designs are available, and we asked the community to share feedback to help refine these designs, including the look and feel of the station and surrounding area.

The project is in the planning stage with site investigations underway with the West Footscray to Albion Rail Upgrade complete in 2030.

The new station will provide easier and safer connections across the rail line and support more reliable journeys for passengers travelling through Melbourne’s west, while helping to untangle Melbourne’s most complex rail junction outside of the CBD, making way for Melbourne Airport Rail.

Albion Station

The new Albion Station will provide easier and safer connections to the station from either side of the rail line, featuring an accessible, centrally located pedestrian overpass with stairs and lifts, leading to the central platform, that will feature new shelters and improved seating, lighting and directional signage.

A welcoming entrance to the station will feature a new station plaza with landscaping, new seating, and bike hoops.

New pedestrian paths will connect to Sydney Street and to the bus bays on Ballarat Road Service Road, as well as Talmage/Ferguson Street.

Further design and community engagement will be undertaken and final designs released. The new Albion Station will be complete in 2030.

General

Construction on the Melbourne Airport Rail Stage 1: West Footscray to Albion Rail Upgrade began in February this year. The project, including the new Tottenham and Albion stations will be complete in 2030.

The 2 new stations are in the planning stage.

We’ll also be able to share more information about construction timelines next year.

Both stations are in the planning stage.

We’re inviting feedback from the community on the early designs to help us refine the final designs. Locals are invited to share their feedback by filling out our design feedback survey on Engage Victoria.

For Tottenham, we’re also inviting planning submissions from the community as part of our planning approvals process.

This feedback, which along with our technical requirements, will help us shape the final designs.

We’re still in the early design phase of the project, and we’re yet to determine the type of lifts we’ll install in the new stations.

Lifts will be able to accommodate mobility scooters, wheelchairs, and prams.

The lifts will be fully Disability Discrimination Act compliant.

If there is a power outage, the lifts will operate with a backup power supply.

At Tottenham Station, car parks will be retained on both sides of the rail lines.

As we are still in the early design stage, any potential changes to Sunshine Road or Rupert Street car parks for the new Tottenham Station will be confirmed as part of the final designs that will be released next year.

At Albion Station, the layout of the commuter car park will change slightly to make way for the overpass entrance, stairs, lifts and landscaped plaza.

Any further car park changes will be confirmed when the final designs are released.

Albion

At the new Albion Station a central canopy on the platform will shelter passengers from the weather and elements all year round, while presenting a complementary and modern element to the station precinct.

Weather protection will also be located at each end of the station’s island platform, as well as on the overpass and the stairs.

We won’t be making any changes to the existing bus stops that service Albion Station. This means there will be no changes as part of the Albion Station project to the bus stops on Sydney Street, Ballarat Road or the Ballarat Road Service Road.

We will be improving pedestrian access to the station and putting in new entry points on both sides of the station.

Accessible parking at Albion Station will be relocated to align with the new main station entrance. The accessible parking spaces will be positioned close to the new entry and exit point, including access to the overpass, lifts and stairs.

The exact location of the new accessible parking spaces will be finalised and shared with the community when we release the final designs next year.

Tottenham

The new Tottenham Station includes a new, wider underpass that will be built from Rupert Street to Sunshine Road.

When the new station opens, access will no longer be from Ashley Street. Instead, passengers will be able to park and walk to the station from Rupert Street or Sunshine Road and access the station through the new underpass.

Widening the Ashley Street road underpass is not part of this project’s scope. Any future changes would be considered outside this project. This project does not preclude future upgrades to Ashley Street.

The new Tottenham Station will include enhanced safety features such as increased lighting and CCTV.

The new underpass will be significantly wider, around 10m, with clear sightlines which will help with passive surveillance in the station precinct.

The new underpass will connect Rupert Street to Sunshine Road. Separated from Ashley Street, it will provide easier and safer access to the platforms above.

The new station will be located about 20m north and 60m west of the station’s current position, to make way for future electrified Melton and Airport Rail tracks, and so it continues to service the Sunbury Line, with trains running through the Metro Tunnel.

The existing pedestrian path along Ashley Street will remain.

When the new Tottenham Station opens, passengers will no longer access the station via Ashley Street.

Instead, passengers will access the station via Rupert Street or Sunshine Road.

The design of the new underpass will support safer and easier access to the station from both sides of the rail line.
