A city-shaping project for Melbourne and Victoria

The Metro Tunnel is the biggest upgrade of Melbourne’s train network since the City Loop opened in 1981.

It will connect the busy Sunbury, Cranbourne and Pakenham lines through a new tunnel under the city when it opens in 2025. The project includes:

  • twin 9km rail tunnels from Kensington to South Yarra
  • 5 new underground stations at Arden, Parkville, State Library, Town Hall and Anzac
  • underground pedestrian links to Flinders Street and Melbourne Central stations for easy interchange with the City Loop
  • High Capacity Signalling to enable more frequent services
  • safety features including platform screen doors at all stations.

More choice, better connections

  • Better connections to jobs, education and health services
  • Bigger, more comfortable trains with better accessibility
  • Connecting Parkville and St Kilda Road to the rail network for the first time
  • Expanding Melbourne's rail network for the city's growing population
  • 5 new state-of-the-art underground stations
  • Next-generation High Capacity Signalling for turn up and go services

Accessibility

Accessibility is at the forefront of design for the Metro Tunnel stations. We have worked to ensure the stations are accessible and inclusive.

The new trains that will run through the Metro Tunnel will have improved passenger information displays, audible announcements and hearing loops, step-less access to the platform and accessible seats.

The 5 new underground stations in the Metro Tunnel will include:

  • escalators and lifts
  • customer service counters and customer help points
  • generous platform widths
  • Tactile Ground Surface Indicators
  • braille and tactile signs
  • audible announcements and hearing loops
  • improved passenger information displays
  • accessible toilets, ambulant cubicles and Changing Places
  • dedicated evacuation strategy for people with restricted mobility.
