Sewer works for North East Link

We’ve started moving around 100 above and underground services such as power, water, gas, sewerage and telecommunications to make way for North East Link.

As part of these works, we're moving a vital piece of Melbourne's sewer network, the Yarra East Main Sewer (YEMS), to prepare for major construction in late 2021.

Three mini Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) will dig 1.8km of new sewer under Bulleen Road, Bulleen.

To build the new sewer, some works are needed within the sports complex of Carey Baptist Grammar School, where we will build a temporary work site between Dunshea Oval and Bulleen Road. Works will involve building two maintenance holes and a reticulation sewer to connect to the relocated YEMS.

Carey and the North East Link Program are committed to working together throughout the delivery of these works.

Sporting facilities will remain open with some temporary changes to traffic arrangements, the shot put playing area and parking.

Access to the sports complex will always be maintained during these works, with all matches, events and training to continue.

Works are due to commence in March 2021 and be completed by late 2021.

What is a maintenance hole?

A maintenance hole, also known as a manhole, is a deep pit that provides maintenance crews safe access to the sewer.

What is a reticulation sewer?

A reticulation sewer is the connection line into a main sewer.

Working safely on site

A range of measures will be in place to ensure the safety of students and visitors throughout these works.

Works areas will be clearly signed and securely fenced off. Construction vehicle access roads will be clearly marked and away from other vehicle traffic.

Traffic management will be on site to manage construction vehicles as they enter and exit the works area.

All contractors working on site are required to have a valid and up to date Working with Children Check.

Changes to the Sports Complex

We’re working closely with Carey to minimise disruptions to the sports complex during these works.

To keep facilities open and students playing, the current access road around Dunshea Oval will remain open. The project will require up to nine car spaces during works and will build temporary offset car parking in Manningham Council land adjacent to Carey.

Other changes include the temporary relocation of the shot put playing areas and the installation of ball netting around Dunshea Oval. Dunshea Oval will remain open during this time.

Vegetation removal

As part of these works, some vegetation will need to be removed.

The project has a 2 for 1 tree replacement policy and, over the course of the project, will plant more than 30,000 trees.

Along with consulting an independent arborist, Environmental Performance Requirements will ensure tree removal is minimised
as much as possible.

FAQs

What construction impacts can we expect?

During works, you can expect some increased levels of noise, dust and vibration near the worksite. These impacts will be closely managed ahead of and during works within the school’s grounds and must comply with the project's strict Environmental Performance Requirements (EPRs).

How will you maintain safe and clear access into Carey Bulleen Sports Complex?

Sports complex users will have dedicated access points, which are separate to construction vehicle access. Along with traffic management on site to monitor vehicle activity, construction vehicles will be restricted to turn left from Bulleen Park Road to assist in quick and safe movements.

How will traffic on Bulleen Road be impacted?

Larger construction vehicle movements will occur outside of peak travel times. Construction vehicles for these works will account for just one per cent of average daily traffic volumes on Bulleen Road. While no significant delay or queuing is expected, the project, along with the Department of Transport and Planning, will closely monitor traffic on Bulleen Road and adjust plans when required to minimise disruption for road users.

Where can I park at the sports complex?

During the works, the project will require up to nine car spaces and will build temporary offset parking on Bulleen Park Drive.

Will we be able to continue using the multipurpose courts?

The outdoor multi-purpose courts facing Bulleen Road will remain open for use during these works. We are working closely with Carey on plans to minimise disruption for students and the community.

Will sport be affected by these works?

Matches, events and training will continue throughout the works. Construction activities will not be undertaken at the sports complex during peak usage times, including Saturdays. However, construction activity may still occur on nearby areas such as Bulleen Park.

How will sports balls from Dunshea Oval be safely retrieved from the work site during play?

Netting will be installed around Dunshea Oval to minimise the loss of sports balls. We’re working closely with Carey to arrange a process for the safe and efficient retrieval of sports balls on days when workers are on site and can return them to a designated staff member or collection point.
