6 May 2026

We’re upgrading the Eastern Freeway with new express lanes, new traffic management technology and Melbourne’s first dedicated busway.

We’re building a new Doncaster Road interchange to slash travel times in Melbourne's east and upgrading Doncaster Park and Ride to improve connections to public transport and the Koonung Creek Trail, while also improving traffic flow.

The new Doncaster Road bridge will be wider to accommodate 10 lanes of traffic and higher to allow for the new Eastern Busway connecting Bulleen and Doncaster park and rides.

A smarter, faster Eastern Freeway

  • 11 minute faster trips along the Eastern Freeway
  • New busway with park and rides at Bulleen and Doncaster
  • 10km shared paths

Progress of the Doncaster Road interchange

Works are continuing in 2026 to build the new Doncaster Road interchange. We're building the new bridge and ramps in stages. The city side of the bridge is now complete and works are underway on the Ringwood side.

Stage 2 – Ringwood-side

The old Doncaster Road bridge was demolished in January, and traffic is now running on half of the new bridge.

To build the final section of the bridge, we’ll complete earthworks to level out the site and start works to build the foundations of the new bridge.

These works will include piling and concrete reinforcement to build the bridge. In mid 2026, we’ll install structural beams.

By late 2026, we'll complete asphalting, traffic signal modifications, and line marking to allow the final traffic switch onto the completed new bridge.

The new Doncaster Road bridge will be widened to accommodate 10 lanes of traffic.

Power to the crane

Not only is the tower crane big, but it’s also big on sustainability!

Our new electric tower crane utilises a large battery known as an 'Enertainer' – energy in a container - rather than diesel generators that are commonly used with cranes this size.

From a sustainability point of view, it’s a big win!

How we manage air quality and dust

We avoid generating dust as much as possible by:

  • spraying work areas with water and eco-friendly liquids to stabilise surfaces, especially on hot and windy days
  • using street sweepers
  • reducing the speed of construction vehicles where possible
  • monitoring air quality to ensure controls are in place.

Changes to the way you travel and managing construction impacts

To complete our works safely, at times, we’ll need to close lanes, ramps and sections of the freeway, as well as carry out night works.

Delays are expected, please allow extra time for your journey.

All works are planned and managed in line with the project's Environmental Performance Requirements (EPRs). Strict mitigations are in place to make sure construction noise is managed appropriately.

We manage impacts for nearby residents with a range of measures.

Please contact us if you'd like more information on how we can support you during construction.

Green concrete

We're working to lower our carbon footprint on the new Doncaster Park and Ride.

Calcine clay is being trialled to replace by-products from mining in the concrete, used for the new shared paths, making for a more sustainable product.

Doncaster Park and Ride to take shape

We're building Melbourne's first dedicated Eastern busway to open in 2028. In 2026, we're building the busway under Doncaster Road and the multi-level car park with 435 parking spaces, lifts and stairs.

In 2026, locals will start to see the formation of the new Doncaster Park and Ride. Works are now underway to build the multi-level car park, and we expect the passenger buildings to start being built later in the year.

The upgraded Doncaster Park and Ride will provide an express connection to the Eastern Freeway under Doncaster Road, for faster, more reliable trips to and from the city.

This new transport precinct will also feature extra bus platforms for express and local bus services, and new passenger facilities including a ticket office, toilets and a covered waiting area.

Keeping in touch

We’ll be out talking to nearby residents about these works in more detail, including changes to traffic conditions, access restrictions and how we'll be managing any local impacts. If you have any questions now, please contact the 24/7 Contact Centre on 1800 105 105.

Schedule is subject to change. Visit our disruptions map for schedule changes. For more information call 1800 105 105 or visit the Hub at 284 Doncaster Road, Balwyn North 3104.
