The M80 Ring Road Completion is delivering more than 10km of new and upgraded walking and cycling paths, including new and improved bridges, underpasses and crossings.
Upon completion in 2028, the 10km of walking and cycling paths along the M80 Ring Road Completion will connect and help create over 34km of continuous walking and cycling paths across North East Link and Eastern Freeway upgrades.
Key improvements include the M80 Trail upgrades, a new, accessible overpass at Macorna Street and a brighter, wider underpass at Yando Street.
Across the project, the upgraded shared walking and cycling zones across the North East Link will be in accordance with the safe speed limits, with clear signage in place along the paths.
We’ll open the new and upgraded walking and cycling paths progressively to the community as works are completed.
Whether you walk, cycle, drive, or use public transport, North East Link will be more accessible, promoting easier movement around the area, with key connections to public transport and shops, creating more options for active commuting.
M80 Ring Road Interchange
Upgrades to the M80 Trail include safer crossings, improved surfaces and new planting along the trail. These enhancements improve connections to Greensborough, Bundoora and Watsonia, while creating a greener, more welcoming environment for walking, running and cycling along one of the area’s most popular paths.
New and upgraded links around the M80 Interchange will improve safety and access between Bundoora and Greensborough. These paths include new landscaping, wider connections and improved noise walls, making movement through retail, education and employment areas easier for walkers and cyclists.
- A new section of path at Enterprise Drive will fix a missing link between the M80 Trail and Uni Hill Town Centre.
- Three new and upgraded local street connections will link Worcester Crescent, Dublin Green and Waterford Place directly to the M80 Trail, allowing for easier access to the regional trail network and surrounding neighbourhood streets.
- The new Macorna Street bridge will serve as a key entry point to the broader North East Link cycling network, offering a safe crossing over the M80 Ring Road and connecting directly to the M80 Trail.
- A new viewing area with an accessible walking and cycling path will offer long-range views across Plenty Gorge and the Dandenong Ranges, a place for trail users to pause, take in the scenery, and enjoy the expanded green spaces created through the project.
- The new underpass between Yando Street and Hakea Street will form a continuous east–west connection beneath the Greensborough Bypass, linking Greensborough and Watsonia North.
Watsonia Precinct and Grimshaw Street Interchange
6. A new Greensborough Bypass Trail pedestrian bridge over Kempston Street will provide a seamless walking and cycling path to the Grimshaw Street underpass and connections to public transport bus services.
7. A new underpass will link AK Lines Reserve and Trist Street Reserve, improving links between Watsonia, Watsonia North and Greensborough, opening direct access to key recreation spaces and forms an important connection to Grimshaw Street and surrounding paths.
8. New and upgraded paths at the Grimshaw Street Interchange will provide safer, dedicated walking and cycling connections between Greensborough Road, AK Lines Reserve, Watsonia Primary School and Watsonia Road.
9. The upgraded Nell Street walking and cycling bridge will offer a safer, more direct route across the road network. Relocated further south, the new bridge improves visibility and accessibility, including design enhancements and integrated greenery to create a more appealing and secure connection for school users and residents.
10. Elder Street’s new landscaped bridge will provide a green, accessible link between Frensham Reserve, Watsonia Station and the Watsnoia township. Wider paths and reduced traffic on Greensborough Road will make it easier to move through the area, improving access to local facilities and shops.
11. A new landscaped bridge at Watsonia Road with walking and cycling paths will provide a more direct connection to the Watsonia shops, station and new town square.
Nell Street and Macorna Street bridges
Glass Fibre Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) decks will be installed on the new Nell Street pedestrian walking and cycling bridge over Greensborough Highway. In a first for Victorian infrastructure, the bridge decks are made from glass fibre, resin and a lightweight foam core comprising 80% recycled soft plastics – primarily from recycled plastic bottles.
The innovative material required minimal maintenance compared with traditional concrete bridges, which means less noise and emissions from equipment and traffic disruption throughout its use. The colour choice also serves as a navigational marker along the road, so drivers can identify where they are.
Macorna Street bridge is a natural brown, derived from the nearby landscape and Nell Street bridge is a vibrant orange, inspired by its urban surroundings.
The new Nell Street bridge will be located just a 2-minute walk away from the old bridge, improving connectivity and clearing the way for extra lanes and express access to the North East Link tunnels.
M80 Trail viewing area
We are creating a new lookout and rest area overlooking the greenery of the M80 Interchange, with long‑range views across Plenty Gorge and the Dandenong Ranges. This area is located on Country that holds deep cultural significance, with strong and ongoing connections to land, water and community that have existed for thousands of years.
The lookout sits along the existing M80 Trail and is shaded with canopy trees, making it a nice spot to rest at.
Sandy colours, deeper reds and oranges have been used to reflect the local vegetation and geology. It will be a spacious and safe 10m wide area, inspired by the surrounding landscape. The lookout has been designed to be an organic shape with naturalistic materials used so it can nestle into existing trees and local geology.
