Greensborough College is being upgraded to support sporting clubs temporarily relocated during the construction of North East Link.

North East Link will connect the M80 Ring road to an upgraded Eastern Freeway to fix the missing link in Melbourne’s road network.

Several sporting facilities have been identified as construction support areas for the North East Link Project requiring alternative playing grounds to be found for several clubs. Greensborough College has been identified as a suitable new home for the Watsonia Heights Football Club, Macleod Junior Football Club, Macleod Cricket Club, St Marys Greensborough Junior Football Club and St Marys Football Club.

We’ve been working with the clubs, Banyule City Council and Greensborough College to upgrade the sports grounds to accommodate the clubs’ and develop new facilities. The grounds will be used by Greensborough College during school hours and be available for the community and casual users after hours when not being used by the clubs.

The sports ground upgrades will include:

• natural turf AFL/cricket oval, with:
  • synthetic turf cricket pitch
  • irrigation
  • lighting
  • behind goal netting
• new synthetic soccer pitch with fencing and lighting
• new pavilion including change rooms and a social space
• new carpark
• new synthetic turf cricket nets.

What will the new facilities look like?

Will there be changes to traffic and car parking around the College?

There will be some increase to the usual amount of traffic surrounding Greensborough College out of school hours. Sports training and game peak periods will not cross over with school pick-up and drop-off allowing the existing road network to accommodate this traffic.

Will the flood lights impact the surrounding streets?

We will design the new flood lighting to focus directly on the sporting grounds to minimise light spill on surrounding areas. Lighting for the sports grounds and car park will be designed in accordance with Australian standard obtrusive lighting requirements and will comply with the maximum allowable light spill onto adjacent properties.

Will I still have access to the grounds outside planned sports games?

Yes, you will still be able to access the school sports grounds outside of school hours for casual recreation and dog walking when sporting clubs are not using them.

Who will manage the grounds?

Banyule City Council will manage the area of the school which will be used by the sporting clubs. North East Link will work with council to oversee the delivery of the sporting field upgrades being undertaken by the Victorian School Building Authority. Banyule City Council will conduct ongoing sports grounds management including maintenance.

Will any trees be lost to construction?

We're expecting to impact some trees on the school grounds to cater for construction of the pavilion, car park and grounds and we’re making efforts to minimise the number of trees removed.

We’re currently reviewing our designs to minimise tree impacts and identify areas for replanting on school grounds. We’ll have more detail about tree loss and replanting in our community updates to come.

Will sustainability measures be included in the upgrades?

We are investigating a range of sustainability measures as a part of the design, including energy efficiency and rainwater harvesting.
