1 July 2025
We’re working on both sides of Bulleen Road as tunnelling continues on North East Link.
What we'll be doing
Activities to support tunnelling works will take place 24 hours a day, seven days a week. During this time, we’ll aim to minimise noise and light impacts away from your property as much as possible.
Oversize deliveries
We'll be delivering large pre-cast panel beams that will form part of the southern ventilation structure and roof of the tunnel.
Deliveries will occur between 11pm and 5am Mondays to Fridays, with up to six deliveries each night.
Most deliveries will arrive from the Eastern Freeway and Bulleen Road before entering our work site off Bulleen Road near the Carey Sports Complex.
Managing construction impacts
Throughout our works, you may experience noise, light, dust, and vibration. We manage these impacts through real time monitoring, water carts and street sweepers, targeted lighting, and reducing noise and vibration within the construction zone.
You may notice workers on local streets capturing photos as part of our ongoing management of these impacts. We do this in conjunction with our modelling to ensure we have an accurate understanding of how these impacts may be felt in different areas. We will notify you before capturing any photos that include your property and we are happy to provide these photos upon request.
You may also see workers machinery in place, in and around construction areas, workers completing surveys in local streets and an increase of trucks removing dirt from our worksites.
Track our TBMs
Our TBMs are powering ahead, excavating the North East Link Tunnels from Watsonia to Bulleen. Both TBMs will take planned breaks throughout their journey from Watsonia to Bulleen to undertake regular maintenance. You can track their progress by visiting the Tunnel boring machines tracker.
Changes to Bulleen Road
We've been working around the clock raising the ground below the future Bulleen Road and building the new bridge. As works progress, we'll need to close sections of Bulleen Road between Manningham Road and the Eastern Freeway in July, allowing crews to safely realign Bulleen Road.
Once complete, road users will be driving on the new permanent Bulleen Road lanes, marking the first milestone of the Eastern Freeway interchange.
Eastern Freeway Upgrades
Works are progressing across all of our sites with foundations for structures and bridges beginning to form on the freeway shoulders and centre median.
We're preparing to open new lanes on Bulleen Road with the bridge between the Eastern Freeway and Carey Sports Complex ready to open later this month.
New bridges for better trips
As we build new express lanes on the freeway, the road and pedestrian bridges that cross the freeway at Estelle Street, Doncaster Road and Heyington Avenue are all being upgraded to provide better connections.
Over the coming months, we'll need to work from the freeway for short periods as we install the remaining bridge elements, ready for opening in late 2025.
Freeway disruptions are expected as part of the significant works to build the new freeway bridges. Expect overnight lane, ramp, carriageway and freeway closures.
Keeping in touch
We’ll be out talking to nearby residents and businesses about these works in more detail, including how we’ll be managing any local impacts. If you have any questions now, please contact the NELP 24/7 Contact Centre on 1800 105 105.
Bulleen Road closed day and night
As works progress, from 8pm Sunday 13 July to 6am Monday 21 July, we'll need to close sections of Bulleen Road between Manningham Road and the Eastern Freeway.
From 9pm to 5am Friday 18 July to Monday 21 July
The Ringwood-bound exit ramp will be closed nightly. Detour via Burke, Doncaster and Bulleen roads.
There will also be nightly lane closures on Bulleen Road bridge and Thompsons Road next to Bulleen Park and Ride.
From 8pm to 6am Saturday 19 July and Sunday 20 July
Bulleen Road between the north of Veneto Club and Thompsons Road will be closed. Detour via Thompsons and Manningham roads. You can stay up to date with all lane closures in the area at bigbuild.vic.gov.au/disruptions
Bulleen Road milestone
From 6am, Monday 21 July, a newly-realigned Bulleen Road will reopen with its permanent lanes in place.
The new Bulleen Road will allow safe construction of the Yarra Link green bridge and keep Bulleen Road moving while we build the North East Link tunnels and connections to the Eastern Freeway.
