We’re building the North East Link, Victoria’s longest twin road tunnels. The 6.5km tunnels will be built up to 45 metres underground – passing traffic under instead of through local suburbs, preserving more parkland and recreational areas from Borlase Reserve and Banyule Creek in Yallambie to along the Yarra River (Birrarung) in Bulleen.

Our first Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) ‘Zelda’, began its journey from Watsonia to Bulleen in August 2024, creating the northbound section of the North East Link tunnels. Our second TBM ‘Gillian’ launched shortly after in September 2024 to build the southbound section of the tunnels.

Both TBMs will operate 24 hours a day by a crew of up to 20 people – including TBM operators, electricians, mechanics, ring builders and tunnel engineers. When complete, the North East Link tunnels will take 15,000 trucks off local roads every day and reduce travel times by up to 35 minutes. You can track Zelda and Gillian’s groundbreaking journey in our interactive map below.

Both TBMs will take planned breaks throughout their journey from Watsonia to Bulleen to undertake regular maintenance. TBM breaks will be displayed on the below map.
